Rumour on MS/AMD TechTour 2005: Win LongHorn will be 64 bit only.

Don't shoot the messenger; I'm just reporting what some posted what MS said on the tech tour, which is currently going through west coast (started in Chicago). This was reported by someone who was at the Irvine event.

It was quite clear from the presentation that Longhorn was to be 64bit only for server and workstation product and very likely (like I said only some hemming and hawing) to be 64bit only for the Home class product.
I don't know how reliable the info is; so take it for what it's worth, or what you want it to worth. Believe it if you want to, don't believe it if you refuse to; I'm just passing along what I have heard.

Will be attending Tech Tour on the 21st of next month, so unfortunately cannot confirm until then.

The Longhorn release is still quite a while off, however - nearly a year away (RTM is due May 2006, if my aging memory serves).

I'd say I met the reported statement with the same incredulity as the above - but not having yet attended, could unfortunately not offer a definitive answer one way or the other.

Perhaps the attendee misheard, and the comment was regarding a Home Edition of Longhorn Server (which would make a bit more sense).

iirc Microsoft has already officially announced and confirmed that Longhorn will indeed be distributed in 32 and 64 bit flavors. To go back on their word would be...very Microsoft-ish of them.

Although with the recent pacing of Longhorn development I wouldn't be surprised if, by the time it is finally released, every processor is 64-bit.

no possible way

they thrive on market penetration, doing this would be shooting themselves in the foot

64 bit cpus, i bet....in less than 2% of homes currently (maybe even far less)...say it reaches 10% by the time they release longhorn (very generous estimation), why would they develop a new os for a minority group

Not that I disagree with your point (in fact, I agree it is likely untrue), but it would be remiss not to point out the above source is circa November 2004.

I heard they were making two versions, both 32 and 64 bit.

Surely the world will not end.

We all make mistakes. No need to apologize.

Now that Intel has released 64 bit procs, AMD is moving into their third generation of 64 bit procs, many laptops are becoming available 64 bit, I would say the estimate of 2% ownership is incredibly low. I have three computers in my household, 2 are AMD64. Almost everyone who build their own systems will use nothing but 64 bit in the future, any business worth their salt will not upgrade their workstations to a P4 3.4 or something like that. I dont think it is likely that the new Windows will be 64 bit only, but I also dont think that 64 bit-ness is all that rare. Also, the release date will probably get pushed back 3 or 4 more times, so the country might even be half 64-bit by then. I bet Japan (all those wealthy geeks over there) will be an even higher rate. I dunno, still too early to make a guess at whether or not it is feasible, but my stance is: if you want to go 64 bit only, it will not hurt you.

Unless MS releases the 32 bit OS under a different trademark.

*i didn't read anything i know its horrobile but i do not hav ethe time to atm*
Ms might purposely release it only in 64 because there rn't many 64 bit computers out there?
This would force all those users to buy new computers? Which i mean it might not totally relate to microsoft profits... BUt really microsoft has total control of the market... so if they realse it only in 64... then alot of people r gonna buy 64 bit machines to run it?
They control the market

People aren't going to buy new computers just because a new operating system came out. ESPECIALLY since Longhorn is at best a mere upgrade of Windows XP (it seems like they scrapped all of the good aspects of Longhorn).
No, actually if they did that, most of the people would stick with Windows XP. Anyway, who really needs Longhorn? I mean, the new features are far from being important...

But then again, it would only be a loss for them to not release it 32-bit.

I do have one computer which is 64-bit. But I also have 3 old computers which are 32-bits. I do not want these computers to not be able to upgrade their OS. (well, i do not really care actually, since I have gentoo on all of them) But still, i'm pretty sure for most of the people, it would be a sad thing.

There's also the fact that most of the laptops won't be 64-bit when Longhorn will come out. (most of 'em)

Microsoft would be plainly stupid to do that. But guess what, it's Microsoft! So we don't know :P
