They're pricier than they need to be, they play dumb games in sales and support, their tech support is outsourced, they contain proprietary features to save Dell's butt and not yours, etc...

Take a look at the fabulously-written satrical look at the Top 10 reasons to buy a DELL Laptop

That and:

I have had 6 servers from 6 different customers with 3 different models have servers shipped to them with; bad hard drives, nics, power supplies, raid cards, cdrom drives and one missing a heat sink.
To top it off all of the notebooks I have worked with from Dell have had some type of heat problem, tho i have not worked with their P-M series notebooks so I can't comment on them.
When I call tech support I talk to someone who is reading out of a book even when I talk to their premium support unlike hp who sends me to a guy in canada who thinks for a living.
And lastly it's Dell. They are not a technology innovator/creator/company they're a technology warehouse. They purchase the cheapest parts and sell them for the most profit. They sell in bulk and care only about the bottom line.
Other than that I just plain don't like them. Just my opinion. I could be wrong.

well myself I never liked Dell, but after being disappointed with laptop market for other brands, Dell seemed like a nice option since they offer really good deals with all the coupons.

both my dell desktops work just fine (although most every part i changed) and my pda is awesome. i got a fanastic deal on my x50v that nothing else could touch for the specs i got.

their tech support is ok, i mean, i had to get a new BT keyboard and they did a replacement for me in less than a week's time. never had to call them though

I'd get a Dell if I were on a tight budget looking for a system that is:
Extremely powerful (9300)
Extremely portable (700m)

or if I had a large budget with no care to size, XPS2. My rather specific tastes led to the Ferrari decision, however.

Warranty issues can be a problem with second rate companys. This is why I got a 4 year warranty. After a Compaq, I found it needed a 3 year warranty. The motherboard went bad after 1 year.

no problems here with my DELL, and the price was unbeatable

just like you i always thought that Dell laptops felt and looked cheap until I got to try 9300... as far as their support goes, it does suck... I've been trying to get installation CDs shipped to me and I keep getting referred to different people,

Well, I will say that, from my experience, the new Inspirons are built fairly well. Too bad that's about the only good thing I can say...

Having worked in the IT field I have a hard time supporting a company that out sources all of its tech support to india.

To me its like shopping at Wal Mart, the prices are cheaper but the souls of every small business give me a dirty look.

all I am hoping is that I will not have to deal with any tech support at all... I haven't with Asus & Fujitsu that I owned... lets hope I won't have to deal with Dell for at least a year

I think there are a lot of threads on this... i've made a page reply and i don't have the energy to do it again. search it

Tech support is great for me. I don't have any problems with it at all. You just gotta be patient and calm.

"They're pricier than they need to be, they play dumb games in sales and support, their tech support is outsourced, they contain proprietary features to save Dell's butt and not yours, etc..."
Tell me, can you show me a major retailer that has a lower price for the same configuration? What games do they play in sales? Support isn't as great as it could be, but I still love it. What major company's tech support is not outsourced? Well, E-Machines, but their support still sucks. What major company does not use proprietary features?

"And lastly it's Dell. They are not a technology innovator/creator/company they're a technology warehouse. They purchase the cheapest parts and sell them for the most profit. They sell in bulk and care only about the bottom line.

They know how to do business. They don't do new stuff because that's risky. They do tested and proven things that are guaranteed to make money. If you ran a business, I doubt you would be different. They don't purchase the cheapest parts. They use very good parts. Sure, they get them for cheap, but that doesn't mean they're the cheapest parts. I abuse my system a lot, and no problems at all with the hardware. What do you mean they sell in bulk? They let each customer configure the computer they way they want to. To do that, you can't sell in bulk, nor can you build systems before they are ordered. The only time I've seen Dell sell in bulk is when they sell from QVC or something.

I'll agree that the older ones do. The newer ones do not, especially the 9300 and the XPS. The Latitude line is built very solidly, as is the Precision systems.

Anyway, Dell systems are good quality for cheap. There are other companies out there who are good quality too. Sony is good quality, but overpriced, and the support sucks. IBM is the best in quality, but overpriced.

Anyway, a major reason to go with Dell is the warranty, especially on laptops. That Complete Care coverage is awesome. On a laptop, I would only get 4 years on the warranty and Complete Care for the same time period, no matter what company I buy from. Although, the company will most likely be Dell. I doubt anyone can beat their price, even if they can beat the warranty.

Well your name does give away your feelings.

I was kept on hold by DELL for 12 hours once and then they hung up on me.

I will not give my business to anyone with that much gall. Especially when the Indian tech guy said his name was Steve. Yea and my name is Anuj.

When you're dealing with Tech support... nobody wants to deal with the maker of the product... they want you do go through the reseller. ISTNC doesn't outsource (yet) I've never been put on hold.... ever

I have a Dell i5150 for about a year now, and so far everything is fine with it, and hopefully it will stay that way.

i don't know why i never really like fan boys' of any type..
i just find them usually very very biased and unreasonable at times...

dell is big, they can sell for cheap, they know how to do business.. lots of ppl say their stuff is crap, well.. guess what? they are the best sellers.. it is self explanatory. they get deals such as the geforce 6800go ultra before any1 else..

for the price, it is hard to find something better.. i agree, sony, IBM's are overpriced.. i really don't find many HP/compaq attractive (spec's wise) Dell does a good job providing different line of products..

from my short experience.. i am usually impressed with companies that make their own systems ( asus, clevo, acer )

You actually stayed on the line for 12 hours? If that's true, that's real dedication (/stupidity?). I would've hung up long before and tried calling again, or even sent them an email.

Personally, I've never had to wait on hold for more than 2 minutes (I'm sure I'm one of the lucky few). Needless to say, that doesn't mean that their tech support has been that helpful anyways.
