Painting a i9300

So i've got this brilliant idea to customize my i9300 by painting it when it gets here. I'm thinking of drawing tribals on the top cover, but I don't know what paints I'd use or what method. Has anyone here ever tried painting a laptop before, and if so what type of paints would you suggest that would have a nice finish and wouldn't scratch off? Also, if anyone is really experienced, what could I use to sketch out some shapes before actually painting, just some graphite or charcoal, good brush for detail work, etc.
Thanks

I used some fine "sandpaper" (can`t recall whats the real name) and a spraycan from my local paint-store.

That *might* work, I could always make a stencil. So you just sandpaper the area you want to spray, and you get a nice no scratch finish?

I have used it for a couple of weeks now, and there is no scratches yet. Use many thin coats that is transparent. If you make one thick layer it will crack and scratch of. I had to make 5 layers before it was not transparent. The white rim layer was extremly thin.

Hey hifiking.. Just wanted to say that the black looks really nice! I've been thinking about doing the custom paint thing myself since I got my 9300 a month ago. Still thinking about it...

I used a mile of tape to cover up all the corners properly, they so curved :-)

My screen looked like this, so i changed it to a LG screen.

did you disassemble the trim before painting? or did you just tape off the area around the trim?

Yes I dissasembled the palmrest from the rest, the trim is integrated with the palmrest, so I hade to use "some" tape to cover the gray parts.

That really looks nice. I am tempted to do it because of how much better it looks without the ghetto white trim.

Ok, so I got another question here, do you know if painting the chassis voids your warrenty? I hadn't thought of this before, but I imagine Dell wouldn't like it if I had problems and returned to them a 9300 with designs on the cover, no matter how good they ended up looking

If you break anything while painting, or anything breaks later because you painted it, you have a problem. But if it`s not related to the art, I BELIVE it will be ok. Had a simular case with sony and a SACD player where i had modded it, but since that mod didn`t affect the breakdown, the waranty was still wallid. Ì don`t know this for sure, so don`t quote me when you call DELL.

Wouldn't purchasing an XPS Gen 2 Palmrest acheive a similar goal without the risk of damaging your I-9300? Someone did that on a previous thread.

Anyone know where to look on Dells site for case parts such as the XPS2 Palmrest? I've looked but was not able to locate parts such as this. If I could simply buy it from dell and it fits the 9300 thats how I'd go I think.

It sounds like you're refering to a replacement panel for the inside of the chassis, and i'm looking to put a graphic of my own design on the outside of the LCD, on top of the laptop while closed. I don't think there's any way I could buy a replacement panel for that to either paint on or use instead of painting, unless I got a quicksnap cover and painted on that, but that's getting costly and silly
