Windows XP Pro Upgrade

Ok, so I want to get a notebook without an OS installed, but I don't have a full version of Windows. I only have the XP Pro Upgrade (which is brand new so the serial has not been used yet).

So you know when you want to do a clean install of the upgrade you have to insert another disk to prove that you already have a license for a full version of Windows? Well the only CD I have laying around the house is a Dell OEM CD, and I was wondering if this would work if I inserted it into a non-Dell notebook to prove that I have a full version of Windows?

It depends. If its just a restore cd, like a ghost image, I highly doubt it would work. However if it is an actual windows install cd, (I think all dell oem cds are), you just need to point the upgrade installer to the 386 folder on the cd and it should work.

Try it.... So whats the worst that could happen ????
If all goes bad, youll just have to format the drive and get another copy of XP somewhere.......

The worst that could happen? Paying $110 for XP Home! haha. I'm trying it now as we speak, and it hasn't asked for a full CD yet.

You know what else works like a charm with upgrade disks like that which ask for an old Windows CD. A lot of places still have old unsold copies of 98 or ME in the bargen bin for $10 or $20. You wouldn't think so, but what else are they going to do, toss'em out?

For future reference, nearly all versions of the upgrade paths listed as a requirement in the upgrade specifications will qualify when prompted during a clean installation.

Staren's suggestion is also a good one to make note of (as long as said copy is properly licensed and authentic).

In my experience, upgrade = full install.

The Post is about Upgrade of XP.

I state "Never trusted it"

How lost can one be? Is this a forum where everyone needs the back of their head snatched up and there face shoved right into the solution/posting whatever it maybe.

Upgrade discs can be used for clean installations (without the requirement of first installing the previous version) of course, in no different manner (or with any differing result) than a full retail clean installation.

Was confused by the lack of trust (hence the previous reply).
