100GB 7200rpm gone?

I've been checking dell the last couple of days to see what the wait is on the 100GB 7200rpm drive because I ordered an XPS 2 weeks ago and back then it was 15 days. I went on today and its been removed? Does that mean anything? I'm still getting my HD right?

I was thinking maybe they took it off because of the 35% coupon...

Thoughts?

I ordered the 7200 rpm 100 GB on June 15. My email is already in their inbox about my order status, since it hasn't yet entered production and they took it off their page. Getting kind of worried. Hopefully, I'll get a coupon or two!

Hmmmh....glad I order mine at 35% off, made it $195.

How did you email them Penguin?

The link that says to email if you want to cancel in the order confirmation email. I figured I would just use that one. They sent me back a message:

Mr. XXXXXXX:

Your system has a delay about 20 working days due to the 100GB HARD DRIVE. That is why your system has an estimated shipping date of 07/15/05.
Bah!!

Yea basically same for mine...I just hope they don't cancel the order on me like I heard happened to some members here back in May...

Hey, I'm the only one left on the forum from the May order and it was me who started the thread about Dell auto-cancelling my order back then...

As I said to Penguin, its like being in a boat with no paddle in the middle of the Pacific except now it looks like there is an ARMADA of us !!!!!

Cancel that order and get the 80-7200 instead. Hitachi and seagate have both reported they are having problems with the yield for those drives. Any date dell gives you means nothing.

Hey RamIT, can you point me to any news on this, and what do you mean by "yield" ? TIA

In any case, I'm letting it ride one more week till July 5/6 then I'll see if I can change the order, don't wanna do a freaking cancel if it means losing my 35% coupon with that order....
Yield is the percentage of drive built that actually work. If you build 100 drives and 50 work then you have a 50% yield. When I ordered my XPS2, there was a note that said you order could be delayed if you select the 100GB 72k rpm drive. That note kept me from ordering it.

Thanks Masic. Basically when I did the original order back on May 11, there was no such notice. Wow, you would think after all these years of HDD development, they would have this perfected by now...

I ordered mine on June 12th and it's still not here yet. I'm not that worried, though, since they gave me an estimated date of July 11th... but I'm wondering if I should just switch to the 5400 RPM drive since people are saying that the performance gain is negligible
post #15 of 305
That's only for the 60 GB 7.2 drive compared to the 80 GB 5.4. That's because of areal density (more bytes togtether so it's easier to read off the 80 GB hard drives since it's the same size as the 7.2). That's why it appears negligible, I believe. The 7.2 only makes up for the lower areal density (having less storage on the same amount of hard drive). I dunno, I may be wrong, but that's how I understood it. Anyways, Dell says they are building my computer (supposedly, but it's not even in production). I emailed them about them not having it on the site anymore and asked 3 questions about availability and if it will affect my order. I will be sure to post it when they email back.

I thought I read somewhere that at 100 GB, the density of the data is such that at 5400 RPM vs 7200 RPM, the performance gain is very small and therefore next to unnoticable.

So, should I be patient and go with bleeding edge? Or change and be smart? lol

I have a buddy with the 100Gig 7200 with the same specs as mine only i have the 5400.Man you guys are wasteing money there is a slight difference but so slight i think the difference is because we know his has the 7200 if you put the two side by side and did not tell anyone they could not tell the difference unless you told them to look for it.Its up to you but its a waste in my opinion.

Mine cannot be changed

Oh well, 7200 rpm ftw!

For those of us that used the 33%+12% we probably can't change that much. Its not that big a deal unless they cancel us. I think we can be patient. Its not the end of the world...

Yeah, I decide to heckle them as well with another email, this time specifically about the drive - much like what Penguin is doing.

Why not, the more the MERRIER....row, row, row your boat gently down the stream, merrily, merrily, merrily life is about the 7K100 drive...
