just bought a brand new i9300

yesterday my brother spent $1709 on his first laptop.....hes an extreme gamer and plans to attend CPL in the summer, he wanted a MOBILE COMPUTER....so he put the specs has high as he could with the money..heres the specs

1.86 GHZ PM 533 FSB
80GB 7200 RPM HD
256MB Nvidia 6800 GO
intel 2200 WYFI
17" WUXGA true(the same that is in the XPS 2 system)
and hes buying 2 gigs for crucial ram

heres the question..
when you first get the laptop after delivery, it comes with worthless shit on it....AOL....dell stuff etc..it all can really junk up the computer......with all the gaming he does he needs it to be really crisp and with all of those deals and what not that come with the new laptop those could slow him down...

soo should he reformat as soon as he gets the laptop and start completley fresh without all of the junk on there or should he leave it....

if he was to reformat....what drives would he need to install?

thanks!

Hey I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if HE JUST! ordered that laptop, he might want to cancel and re purchase. You can get a barebones XPS GEN 2 for about 1790 with the new 35% coupon, barebones means maxed out 9300.

Well from what I have heard there is a button in the start menu that will burn a OS CD along with the drivers you need. Yes you really should reformat the drive and upgrade some of the drivers, pretty much any "power" user will tell you that. If anyone can put up a list on which drivers you need to install first, second, etc. please do so.

I just remove what I don't need and use a registry cleaner. I also defragment afterward. I have done this with 5 laptops. I never have any operating system problems. Also, as was mentioned the 35% coupon is out.

hey its the brother that bought the laptop....yea i see that....but its bearbones...if i had a few hundred more bucks hell yea id do it man but the 9300 i got....80 GB HD at 7200 rpm....bearbones for the xps is 60...without the 7200....if i wanted what the 9300 that i just got has id have to pay another 300 bucks if ilooked at it right..and as far as the prcessor....would u really pay the next COUPLE hundred dollars for just like 140 MHZ more? i have more battery life with this....only thing the xps has over mine besides the 140 more mhz and the nvidia card is an ultra....mines just 6800 GO.....

but yea...i was just gunna add/remove shit until all of it was clear...but my brother is tellin me it wont be as fast unless i just reformat it all...soooo i dunno

It won't be unless you really really go deep into the registry. They hid things everywhere. The reformat only takes about 40 minutes, so I'd recommend it. You'll spend more time trying to clean everyithing manually. And don't worry about the card. You can OC it and it'll handle just about everything you throw at it.

yea if only i knew how to overclock lol

u guys are way beyond what ill ever know....

Well I don't know exactly what the 9300 and XPS2 guys use (I have a 9100 with a MR9800), but it's pretty simple. You just have to be careful and take it slow. You don't want to overtax your card.

Ok, im telling you, I had the 9300, its a SOLID machine...First off if your going to get a 9300, dont get the 1.86ghz, its not worth the price difference, I have a 2.0 and still don't notice a difference. Two, 7200 rpm drives are a waste of money, the 80Gig 5400 is same speed as the 60Gig 7200 for the mere factor the data is closer on the 80 gig.

The 9300 can handle any game you throw at it as long as you OC it, then itll run it at max power.

Your going to wish however you boought a XPS Gen 2.

Battery life on this is 2hrs 20 minutes, on my 9300 was about 2hrs 45 minutes with a 9 cell battery.

And again barebones XPS is still faster then a fully loaded 9300.

2.0 Pentium M, 6800 Ultra, 33% faster stock.

Jus my 2 cents from owning both machines, I am very happy with the gen2 now, its much cooler looking and much more powerfull in gaming, think very hard before buying the 9300, im telling you, if you saw both in real life side by side, you'd go damn that Gen is cooler...Heres a pic for your thinking!

I thought you couldn't notice the difference between the 1.86 and 2.0?

I had a 1.6, and now I have a 2.0, the only difference I notice is I have 2 gigs ram instead of 1, its slightly faster!

But with gaming its HELLLA BIG DIFFERENCE!
Oh oh. Sorry misunderstood ya. You're right there is a big difference between a 1.6 and 2.0.

alright then....well then ill do this....ill just over clock the i9300 and it'll be just as good as the xps except for a difference in 140 MHZ......but to overlcock the 6800 i read up on the forums....ive seen a wide variety of number...like 300-? and 700-730 or somethin like that......what are the numbers of the 6800 ultra???? so i can overclock it to those specific settings? thanks fellas....

see this way i have all those specs that the xps has.....even an 80GB hardrive at 7200....just 140 mhz diff.....so yea what kind of numbers should i use

and what program should i use to overlock it.....ive heard something called NVTWEAK at the other forum.....should i use that?
