Celeron M or Pentium M

Ok I am looking at getting the 6000. I have had a Celeron in an old desktop. I was not to found of it. So when I built my new desktop I went with an AMD. So my question is the Pentium M worth the extra money? Do you get that much more performance? Also I have a friend that ordered a desktop from Dell and he registered as a buisness and used his SS# as a tax id. Is that ok to do that?

THe pentium M isn't that much more in performance than the celeron M, but it does give much better battery life due to speedstep.

The celeron 350 and 360 with their 1MB L2 have half the L2 Cache of petium m. The rest have 1/4 the pentium m's cache with only 512k. That makes for a pretty big performance drop. L2 cache is extremely important in intel's architecture. Definately worth it to go with the pentium m.

Pentium M --> Pentium 4 -- Mobile Pentium 4 --> Some Pentium 3's --> Celeron

most of the information I have come accross says there is little difference between the P-M and Celeron-M. I can't find the info right now though to link it.

Cache isn't that big of deal on Intel processors...larger cache means more latency and not much improvement. Just like there is no preformance gain of the 2mb cache in the 6xx sequence over the 1mb cache of the 5xx sequence desktop cpu's.

Personally I would never buy a Celeron. I definately think its worth the extra money for the Pentium-M for added performance and battery life.

OK thanks for the imput. I think I will go with the M if I can find a good deal... Anyone have any suggestions about the 6000? Anyone recommend another model that is an all around notebook.

I wouldn't either. They are really only for basic stuff. My sister has a Celeron 2.4GHz in her i1150, and it is fine for her, but I never could. She has: Celeron 2.4Ghz, 512Mb RAM, 30Gb HDD, Combo Drive and a Toshiba MiniPCI WiFi Card.

IF for some reason you get a Celeron, make sure you get 512Mb RAM. Her laptop was really slow on XP Home and just a few progs (and unfortunately she refuses to use Firefox ), so when I upgraded my laptop to 2x 512MB, I sold one of my 256MB sticks and put the other in her i1150. Performance was MUCH better, but still not up to the P-M.

yeah.. if you think celeron doesnt make that big of a difference, go get one and see how much you like it compared to a laptop with a pentium m

I'd say you need to look again. L2 cache doesn't make that much difference on AMD's, but it's critical for intel's. Celerons have allmost allways been their pentium counterparts minus most of the cache. That's how they cripple the performance and sell a budget chip.

Yep. The cache is certainly important. Thats one of the reasons the Pentium M performs so well at lower clock speeds over the P4.

Get the P-M. You won't be disappointed.

Dell released a 35% off coupon yesterday...that should get you more than 250 off (depending on your specific configuration though). Although I dont know if the coupon is still valid

if you have the money for a mercedes get a mercedes if not get a kia, same applies to processors. Tho' the celeron acomplish very well the basic tasks as long as you don't go gamming or productivity. Office and home use is more than adequate. tho' i use a pentium m anyways. Just don't like the idea of using a factory reject cpu

I would strongly suggest Pentium-M and not Celeron-M. You will thank all of us later who suggested P-M.

The Celeron-M is essentially a pentium-m with half the L2 cache and no speedstep, no at full speed it is identical to a pentium-m BANIAS of the same speed. The kicker is there is no speedstep for it. So for gaming, and any other time 100% of the processor is used the celeron-m and pentium-m perform almost identically.

In a nutshell, only the battery life is really affected.

For everyone saying that a CELERON doesn't preform as well as a pentium-m well they are right. A celeron is based on a p4, not a pentium-m and since the pentium 4 is already slower per clock cycle obviously the celeron will be too.

Thats basically what the Celerons are aren't they? They couldn't go a certain speed so they clock them lower and disable/remove the extra cache.

i think that's a bad analogy, cause if you can afford a mercedes, you dont necessarily get one. i'd say a better one is: if you have the money for a new car, you buy that.. if not, you get a used one

i used a celeron m laptop and that thing is slowwwww. so just spend a little more and go for the pentium m.
