Got 9300...screen

I just got my 9300 (sig). Installed everything, firefox, avast, norton goback, ect.

I started playing cs:s and holy shit, its amazing compared to my brothers k33 with integrated graphics.

I was really worried about the screen and on powerstrip I read SECxxx, samsung. This screen has alittle light leakage around every edge, and some sparkles. The sparkles are like little tiny spectrascopes. You basically see a realllly tiny rainbow for each pixel and ontop of that theres like a fine dust. The sparkles really arent that bad. Something else I noticed about the screen is that when viewing it from straight on, aswell as any other angle, the screens edges are darker than in the middle. Im not sure if this is normal or not but its not that bad. Also, the whites look more like a matalic off white. Compared to my brother's xbrite, it stacks up pretty well. yeah, it has all that stuff I mentioned but its really not that bad at all. Its a keeper.

Other than that, everything seems to run fine except there seems to be alittle heat problem, I think. Everything is cool except the ram which I installed a 1 gig trancend. It gets really hot on that area, compared to the other areas atleast and Im not sure if I should worry or not. I installed i8kfangui but there was no monitor for the ram. Should I worry?

Also, can someone walk me through updating the nvidia 6800 go drivers?

Thanks,
jcll2002

any questions, id be happy to answer.

Being an XPS 2 owner, I can say that the vent for the memory gets real hot after some gameplaying. If I don't prop the back up a little, I'd say it can get scorching hot. Seems to be normal...I'm using Dell RAM and I got a replacement system for a screen issue. The old one got just as hot, so I think we're ok.

Glad to hear you like your new machine, looks like you got a good deal on it.

As for updating drivers, this is the procedure I go through:

First, take a screenshot of your desktop so you remember where all your icons belong. (hit the print screen key, and open up MS Paint and paste to grab a quick screenshot).

Next, go to Control Panel, then Add or Remove Programs. Select NVIDIA Drivers, and hit Change/Remove. You'll have to click Next a few times probably.

After your computer uninstalls the NVIDIA Drivers, it restarts with a very low screen resolution (everything looks big). When Windows detects new hardware and asks to install it, just click cancel for all of those. It may say "Your hardware is not installed and might not work correctly," but just ignore that.

Now browse to the NVidia driver file (I place a shortcut on the desktop for it before hand to make things easy) and run it. It will extract to a location you can specify and then automatically run the setup program. After clicking Next a few more times, you'll be finished. It will ask for you to restart, and after you reboot, you're good to go.

As for selecting a driver, that's up to you. I use the stock 71.76 drivers, but read around the other threads for info about non-dell drivers. www.laptopvideo2go.com has the latest drivers from NVidia with a special .inf file that makes them work for mobile cards. Simply downloading drivers from NVidia.com will not work.

Thanks.

One more thing about the screen/sparkles... The sparkles look like something sticky was put and dried over the screen, when the screen is white anyway.

Well, I have the LG screen and I doubt that one would alleviate the problems for you. From everything I read, most people tend to go the other direction of LG --> Samsung in an attempt to flee from the "sparklies". I've got the "haze" type of effect on an LG screen, but it's just not a big deal unless I'm thinking about it. Honestly, it's pretty noticeable when I'm focusing in on it, but if I had never read about "sparklies" on this board prior to purchasing the computer, I would have never thought about it or noticed it. Only you can know if it's going to bother you or not. I say, give it a few days to see if some of the light leakage goes away, and see if you get used to the "sparkle" effect. If not, send it back.

Is that so? I have an LG and the screen is faultless. What on earth are you talking about??

What I am talking about is only "some" people are bothered by the grainyness (sparkles) on the displays. If he is one of those people, chances are he will not like the LG's display. You are like me in respect to the grainyness and it doesnt bother us.

I tried to but because Im a kid(14), he didnt really pay attention to what I was saying. I asked him if I could have an LG, he knew that there was samsung and LG. He responded by saying the parts are at the depot so I have no control. BS. Also, he asked if I had a samsung or LG. I responded by saying samsung. He said, wait, let ME check it for you. Really annoying
