What is a benchmark?

I'm going to be getting my first laptop in a while, and all over these forums I hear people talking about benchmarks but I have no idea what they are or what they? Is the 3Dmark2003 everyone talks about a benchmark? Your input is greatly appreciated.

'Benchies' are pieces of software that test the capabilities of your machine. 3DMark03 is one of the benchmarks designed specifically to test graphics cards. A good overall benchmark (IMO) is SiSoft Sandra.
