AMD sues Intel from US to Japan - Page 2

You gave him eight minutes. I'm sure that he'll find some similarly stupid problem - such as pointing out the heat issues of the 4750 whilst ignoring the more significant heat issues suffered by the 4790.

Now, a quick clarification of a few things:

1)The lawsuit has to do with Intel restricting the ability of OEMs to sell compouters with AMD processors.
2)The problem lies not in Intel offering discounts on its processors to make them more attractive and more easily sold at low rates - the problem lies in the discounts being tied to restrictions on AMD sales figures from the OEMs.
3)#2 is made worse by Intel also promising to smash non-compliant companies, or withholding CPU shipments when companies attempted to sell AMD computers (Acer during the Athlon 64 launch, for example.)
4)Yes, AMD doesn't advertise enough. That's irrelevant.
5)No, AMD does not have a clear winning processor in the mobile market. Also irrelevant - their desktop processors have blatant advantages and have had for years.
6)AMD can't offer discounts that match the Intel "strings-attached" discounts because of Intel's huge market share. A 20% discount on 80% of the processors being sold by the company makes a bigger difference (pretending for a moment that the median price of all processors is the same) than a 50% discount on 20% of the processors. That's why AMD can't simply respond by offering discounts to OEMs that overcome the Intel ones. Part of why. The other part is the simple fact that Intel can easily piss away thirty times as much cash on every OEM as AMD does for several years.

The problem lies not in the fact that Intel is making things hard for AMD, it lies in the fact that Intel is methodically chaining AMD to a post in the ground so that it can never become a competitor. AMD can barely increase its market share in OEM sales, and there aren't nearly enough independent purchases to make them a real competitor.

If AMD wins the lawsuit, we may start to see AMD processors offered by Dell, more notebooks released in the US with high-end graphics cards and the Turion line, etc. Or we may see a repeat of the Microsoft lawsuit.

I read the whole stuff in detail. What i gather is no intel for me now .ever. Amd or transmeta will also do but no intel anymore . same with dell. I have heard so much quality complaints from dell ,I was afraid to go with xps2.

Perhaps a small anecdote to illustrate AMD does have a reason to sue:

I was in a local MediaMarket some time ago - a huge European electronics chain based in Germany (these guys are named in the lawsuit as well). I purchased stuff there before, so I knew that they could "order whatever you want", whether it's on display or not. This goes for everything they sell (TVs, VCRs, dishwashers, toasters, cappucino-machines etc.) ... except computers ....... not a single AMD system in sight

here's basically the conversation I had with a sales guy:
- Can I order an AMD-based Acer laptop ? (they had Intel Acers on display)
- Err, no, we don't sell AMD systems ...
- But the TV guy says you can order anything, as did the freezer guy ...
- Err, no, we don't sell AMD systems ...
- Why not ??
- Don't know, but we can't order them, sorry ...

Proving Intel has abused their monopoly is going to be a different story though ... I for one hope AMD kicks their a$$.

Oops double posting.

Yeah until acer ferrari 4000 happened the only decent performer was acer ferrari 3400 and sager 4750 and asus A2k/z80k.

These were no competition to xps2 , 9860 or zd8000. acer ferrari 4000 is still no competition to these notebooks.

I believe if intel falls dell will fall too. anyways dell is having lotsa returns in desktops and notebooks due to defects.
