video support is going to be a question of downloading nvidia's binary installer, installing it, loading a kernel module, and switching some X configs.
sound support is going to be setting the kernel the right way, then grabbing the software straight from the alsa-project website

I don't see what's different on gentoo than redhat for those particular things.
Well, I just got VPN working, so I no longer need windows for anything. I'm pretty satisfied with the laptop now and will probably keep it where it is for a while. I'm hoping to get a Verizon broadband card for their wireless 2mbps internet service, and it should work well with linux.
