First Post, First Notebook?

Thread Starter
i have been following your threads for quite some time and i am looking at getting a new laptop. the asus z71v looks like it is the best notebook ever made, except compared to clevo.

i looked at coboc.com and saw this and noticed the gpu on it. pretty sweet. although the clevo has upgradeable graphics and room for 2 hdds, it cost almost $2000 w/o anything inside it besides mbo and screen!.

my question is, will asus release anything better than the z71v, with modular gpus and ddr2 and such in such in the coming year. i dont want it to become outdated like my desktop did with 64 bit support. p4 530, one month later p4 600 series comes out. that angered me! anyway, you guys seem to be really cool and help each other out, thanks to any replies.

Well you will never catch up with the technology train. It is very fast and it is a known fact that the minute you buy, there will be something better or cheaper (or both) out the next day.

Some will say the Z70 with the X700 (possibly coming) is a better laptop but I guess I just don't think it looks nearly as nice as the Z71's (I am bias though cause I bought the Z71)

Buy what looks nice to you, the Z71 video COULD possibly be upgraded is Asus (or someone else) decides to build a card that fits the slot but the 6600 is a really nice card in it's own right.

Welcome to the forums BTW

Welcome to the Notebook Forums!

There will be no A64 chips with DDR2 within the next year. Probably a year and a half before DDR2 comes to notebooks.

Modular GPUS so far only apply to DTR notebooks, so if you're looking at notebook that you can carry around, count out the modular GPUs.

The Acer Ferrari 4005, Asus Z71V/Z70V are all very good notebooks, balancing mobility with power.

You need to ask yourself first when looking for a notebook, what TYPE of notebook do you need? Are you replacing a desktop computer? or do you need a notebook to carry around to class, for example? If you have a notebook, what are you going to use it for? Gaming? Work? Cruising the 'net?

Is there a particular size of notebook? Small, medium, large? Screen resolution?

Also, is there a particular price limit that you have to shop by? $1,500, $2,000, etc.

man you guys are cool lol

so the z71v's graphics can be upgraded, but only by asus?
that would be sweet to buy a 6800go and put it in there.

yeah, so im better off just waiting for something faster, smaller, more powerful?
also my budget is only around $1300 and be used for college dorm.

thanks

The big question is WILL Asus (or someone else) make a replacement video card. At this time the answer is no but there is always hope...

Actually, I'd go for something slightly LESS powerful with your budget. You could get a very solid notebook with a pre-Sonoma chipset and an ATI 9700 128 MB video card with a better processor, bigger hard drive, and more memory than one of the latest notebooks, due to more recent components and video cards being more expensive.

And FYI: upgrading GPUs is theoretical at this point. But even if replacements are made, the GPUs would have to be the same size and form-factor. a 6800 will NOT fit in a relatively thin & light notebook like the Z71v. It's just too big, and uses too much power.
Jump at it and get the Z71V. if not the Z70v.

Both are nice solid notebook.

nVidia 6600 will kick ATI 9700 anytime.

Asus Z71V is an overclock dream notebook!
But the 7800 which is made using the research budget invested by sony for the playstation 3 graphics chip, is much smaller, much cooler, and quite likely gonna make it into the notebook market. I'm hoping Asus makes a z71v compatible version.

agreed, but price can be a limiting factor, and $1300 is pretty low for a Z71v or Z70v. I was suggesting a budget alternative.

It has been confirmend my Rick from ISTNC that ASUS will not be making an upgraded GPU for the Z71V. The profit from it will just not match putting the effort into another notebook. The Z70V with the x700 should be shipping out late july/early august. Check out my Bigger Badder Z70V thread in the general section.

I have to say, Chaka Kahn, that your biggest limiting factor is your spending limit. However, that being said, c9tech has quite the answer. Sasha's (did I spell that right?) answer is ~$100 more than you said you had, but if you could scrounge up the money, c9tech's suggestion sounds very, very good.

g/l!
I agree about price being the limiting factor. In addition to c9tech, rj tech, discount laptops, and geared 2 play also have prices starting around $1400

i would build my own though everything from coboc. are these specs any good?

asus z71v - $760

Hitachi-IBM 80GB 5400RPM Notebook Hard Drive - $129

Kingston 512MB 200-Pin DDRII533 SO-DIMM Notebook Memory - $59 x 2

Uniwill 258SA/257SA/258KA DVD+/-RW SOSW-852S - $119

intel Pentium M 735 400MHz FSB Socket 478 Processor - $250

$1376 w/o s&h

yeah, i guess i would have to stretch my budget a little bit.
i was reading about how you guys overclock the 400MHz cpus by just flipping a switch. so, i buy this, flip the switch, and its automatically in the 2GHz range? thats pretty sweet.

thanks for all your help

You'll have to be carfull doing that kinda stuff though. Once you "flip that switch", you can kiss your intel warrenty goodbye.

Yeah the CPU core turns a bright yellow when you overclock it.That way, Intel, the black helicopters, the CIA, the MPAA and the FBI KNOW without a doubt that it was overclocked -- come on now. The 2 CPU's (400FSB and the 533 FSB flavors) are cut from the same silicon. There is no difference other than the default speed and multiplier that Intel clocks them at the factory. The cache is the same as well as the chips appearence is identical with the exception of the markings depicting the default speed.

I had a 300a celeron that ended up frying 6 months into me running it at 450 mhz - I sent it back and they never even asked if I OC'ed - they just replaced it. I would have told them I OC'ed it if they asked but I knew there was no definative way of telling a processor is overclocked or not.
