So ati doesn't suck
good to hear

ATI's binary-only drivers are always way behind NVidia's when it comes to performance (relative to the Windoze drivers) and flexibility when it comes to OS changes. NVidia's drivers are remarkably robust against kernel changes. And NVidia is quick to come out with updated drivers when the Linux folks fatfinger compatibility in a new kernel, all the while you wait months for ATI to move. It's just no competition, NVidia is far more committed.

However, if you cannot use the binary derivers for whatever reason, ATI is stronger. Of course both do 2D, but the ATI drivers in Xorg do at least do dual-head which the NVidia equivalent does not.

Has anybody with an ati card even gotten doom3 to finish a timedemo in linux?

I think the only way i got doom3 to work properly under linux was with ubuntu's old packaged drivers running doom3 through wine. slow.

Now i have the newest ati drivers with doom3, native version, under a highly optimized gentoo system, and it runs, for a bit, and then eventually slows down and freezes.

If you are a linux user, DO NOT buy ati. There is simply no excuse for it. ATI's drivers, although they have been working harder on them lately, are embarrassing. While an X700 may pull off HL2 (i have no idea), it will not pull off whatever comes out next, while the nvidia card may.

Some may have success with ati drivers (i consider myself to have had success with them), but an equivalent nvidia card would have alarmingly faster performance.

Saying that nvidia is stronger than ati in linux is like saying that chainsaws are better than herrings for chopping down trees.

So basically your question is, can it run this game? If it may not run a current game, it definitely will not run anything in the future. I think you should go nvidia (and im an ati fanboy) and confidently run this game and many others in the future. Or get the Z70V refresh and boot into windows for your games...

but just to clarify, the 6600 and the X700 will definitely NOT have comparable performance in linux. The 6600 will utterly destroy any ATI card. In linux.

UNfortunately I haven't run anything besides 3DMark05, but at stock speeds and the latest drivers, I managed to get slightly over 1800. However, stock speeds for the Z71v are seriously underclocked. smilepak has been able to reach almost 2200.
