Not quite notebook, but hey this is a good reference forum for anything linux
Ok so I am looking into reorganizing my home network, the other threads I started on this topic led one thing to the next and here is the basics of what I am looking to do...
Currently:
One server setup for file serving, gateway, web server, and FTP server as well as the obvious firewall etc that goes along with gateway...
Looking to do:
One Soekris SBC based Gateway using a 1 gig flash card and possibly a small 2.5" HD if needed. Would be running linux, and act as a gateway to the internet, as well as acting as an access point. Looking into using a tri-mode Linksys a/b/g card I found for approx 80 bucks and seeing if that will work for the wireless access point. At the moment it would remain a private network, eventually I would add in another locked down card into it to allow web access only at a throttled bandwidth to the public. See other thread I started a little ways down for info on that
This computer(Well pint sized computer) would be based off a 266 MHz Geode processor and would take care of my firewall, gateway, access point, and then a small Web/FTP/SSH server as well. That should be all it does. The internet connection is DSL so it isnt like it would be running with a huge load from the internet or anything to that matter, in fact I would be amazed if I got more than one hit a day to the website when I get it up on there, the FTP it might depend on me, as well as the SSH, but really I owuld be one of the few people with the passwords to use either of those.
One Mini-Itx Based Server, acting as a NAS server and Media Server. Here is what I mean by that. It would provide network storage, but I would also using VLC be streaming my personal media to my home network. This would include DVD streams on demand to my computers to watch at will, also so that i dont kill my DVDs to quickly which has already started happening unfortunatly, as well as a Constant Audio stream or two for me to constantly have playing in my house. That would be pretty much all it would do currently... However...
I would also be looking into adding a gigabit ethernet card into the machine and running a software raid 5 array with a direct gigabit ethernet connection to my audio workstation desktop for storage of projects I am working on via NFS and possibly using solid state arrays in the workstation to cut down on noise it creates.
So the main thing I am looking for right now is a way to put the image of a DVD on a computer and make the computer treat it like a normal DVD that VLC could then stream on demand. Obviously there would eventually be a LOT of DVD files on this computer and I know storage may become an issue in the future, right now I have a few HDs to compress, backup and erase as needed to provide this though. I know in CDs this is as easy as making a .iso image of the contents of the CD and mounting it(Well for Data CDs anyways), but I am not so sure on DVDs(Or non data CDs).
Also I am looking for a comparison of software vs Hardware RAID arrays, specificly raid 5. I dont think the difference will be to noticable but I want to make sure.
I am also looking for opinions on wether a 800 Mhz VIA processor with a hardware Mpeg 2 decoder and MPeg 4 accelerator could handle those streams fairly well, and if on top of that it would be able to handle the RAID array in software fairly well. It really wouldnt be doing much else other than that though(And obviously running the linux OS)
So... Opinions? Comments? Suggestions?
