Asus Z70V Update Bios and other issues.

Thread Starter
Hi, I just bought my Asus Z70V a few days ago.

I have a few questions that I can't seem to find any information on from the Asus site or web in general.

I would like to update the bios, but I am not sure how to go about doing it. I have Windows XP Pro SP1 installed and no floppy drive. I understand I can boot from a USB flash drive, but I have no idea how to set that up either. It just seems a really round about process just to update the BIOS. When the support site on Asus.com does work, I can't find any additional information. Documentation seems to be rather scarce. I would appreciate any information anyone can offer.

Furthermore, for the Z70V owners out there. I sometimes hear a clicking sound that seems to originate from the lower left corner of the notebook (near the led indicator lights). It doesn't always happen. When the notebook has been warmed up, it just stops. So I am thinking it might have something to do with the fan, but that's only speculation. It's not a big deal if that's normal functionality, but I'd be concerned if it could possibly lead to other problems.

Heating up. Now I know notebooks heat up like a wild brushfire. But after warmup and 1% load, my notebook hovers at 58C. Just wondering if that is a typical or not. If that's typical, then I believe it's time to buy a cooling pad for this bad boy.

Screen. During boot, I've noticed the brightness seems a little off. What I mean is the bottom portion of the LCD seems to be a lot brighter than the top portion. So in turn, on a completely black image that covers the screen, it looks like a gradient from black to a really really dark grey (top to bottom). Is this something typical? I've dropped the brightness levels down to half and it seems to be ok, but the screen looks rather washed out. Perhaps I am supposed to calibrate the screen somehow? The only way I assume I can do this is through the display properties.

Right now, I have installed all drivers offered from the Downloads section of the Asus Support site (for Z70V notebook). I have Windows XP Pro SP1 Installed.

I'd appreciate any information or help anyone can offer. Thanks in advance.

for BIOS updating, go to Asus' support site and look up your model number. It will give you the latest drivers and BIOS version. Then download the BIOS, extract it, and use the WinFlash program that should come with your system to update it. Just pick wherever you extracted the BIOS update (file should end in .m6v)

Regarding heat, 58 degrees is normal running temp on AC power. If you want it cooler, download Centrino Hardware Control and undervolt your processor. Mine is currently running at 44 degrees on "dynamic switching" setting.

Hope that helps! -Djembe_Rob

the clicking thingy is your hard drive i believe if you have a hitachi drive because my does the same thing too. It is suppose to be a power mangement feature. The LCD thing you mention is just the backlight.
