if you can get away with not using your optical drive while on battery, I'd suggest the modular battery, which will be more compact, since both batteries are in the notebook at once. You wouldn't have to change out anything, and you wouldn't have to carry along extra equipment. That's my preference.

I agree with Djembe_Rob, most of the time the Modular Bay battery is usually the best choice.

When you have both batteries in, it will drain the Modular Bay battery first. That way for example, if you are on a flight and have some work to do, you can do that first on the Modular Bay battery, and when you are finished you can swap in the ROM drive and watch a DVD on the fresh primary battery.

I thought you needed to unscrew 4 pins before you could take out the optical drive and switch it with the modular battery? Is it much of a hassle and what kind of tool do you need to unscrew the pins?

Pins? There is a latch that holds the optical drive in.
Not hard at all to slide the drive / battery in and out.

Hope this helps!

or if you have a program that will copy DVDs to your hard drive (like DVD Decrypter, for instance), you can watch a movie without having to take out the modular battery.

I dunno what screw you guys are talking about. On my M6Ne there is a slide latch, that's it. Switching the battery and the optical drive takes just a couple seconds.

The modular battery is lower capacity than the main battery, but the fact that you can have both in at once is the crucial point for mobility. If you only had two main batteries, you would need to shutdown the computer (or plug in to AC) when you wanted to swap. With the modular battery you can swap one battery or the other without interrupting the system.

I have to have it in standby for it to work, but otherwise it's the same for the Z71v.

I am afraid Sasha is wrong on this one. There are no screws that need to be removed to swap the ROM drive with either the 2nd battery or 2nd hard drive on this model.

It is all done with spring loaded slide switches that lock whatever is in the Modular Bay in place. That is why we call it a Modular Bay!

You can see the picture of it at the bottom of http://www.powernotebooks.com/images/c2-20/ Those pictures are of the Z71A (PowerPro C 2:20), but the operation is the same.

Corrected above.

Well, there are supposed to be 2 hardware locking screws on the bottom of the laptop. Not sure if vendors remove them at sale.
