M680 for video editing / video capture

Thread Starter
I have the M680 with the ATI mobility x700 (128MB),
2 GB RAM and 80 GB hard drive
Also have Vegas Video 4

I have a number of old HI 8mm tapes I would like to move to DVD format and do some editing along the way.

My knowledge is pretty basic on how to do this. I know I can use Vegas to do the editing, but how do I get the video from the 8mm camcorder to the laptop for editing?

My connections on the ATI mobility x700 seem to be limited to IEEE 1394 4-pin port and a S-video outjack (since the s-video connection is labeled as an "out jack" I am assuming this means I can't import video via the s-video connection).

My camcorder (source for the Hi8 mm video) is an old Sony TR101 with regular video RCA type connections, although there is an s-Video connection.

Greatly appreciate any help that can be provided!

You need to pick yourself up one of these.
It will enable you to transfer your HI8 to your hard drive so that you can edit it and burn it to DVD. You don't have to buy this one in particular. Most will come with some kind of video editing software as well. Although what you currently have will probably work just fine. They start out at basic and then go all they way up to advanced i.e. really expensive. This one is the Video Creator 90 but I have the 80. The 80 works great. I don't use it anymore as we have a DV Camcorder now and I just hook that up to the FireWire, but they can also be used to transer stuff from DVD players, VCR's, pretty much anything that you can connect via composite video cables. Good luck.

Any of these will work. Some even have tv tuners to watch tv on your laptop. Avoid KWorld.

if you have a miniDV cam, rec to hi8 cam from miniDV cam.

time-consuming, but costs nothing if you have both cams. worst that will happen is you get black bar on side of screen (minimal) since hi8 may be set for diff aspect ratio (perhaps 1.0) and the miniDV will be non-square (.9)

easy to remove that in vegas though

have you done much editing on this laptop yet? thinking of picking up the bestbuy one and would be running vegas 6 on it. a lot more screen real estate than my sony FS640
