replacing the HDD

I want to replace my Travelstar 80GN with a Travelstar 5K80 but how come the 80GN has some aluminium shielding with a pull tab and the 5K80 doesn't?
How do I get the 5K80 out of the notebook next time without the pull tab?

Does the shielding with the pull tab come off the old hard drive?

If it does, just put in on the new drive going in...

Usually those are just screwed on.

i got the rack off but the shieldin seems to be glued on the drive and it has the SN on it

Would the drive be loose, or impossible to pull out, without that shielding?

Also, does the shielding come off easily?

1. no, it's still mounted with 4 screws in the rack
2. thought it'd be, since i used the tab to pull the original drive out but i think actually it should be able to get the rack out with a screwdriver or two
the shielding seemed to be there just for pulling out the drive

In that case, I feel more confident telling you the drive would be fine without the shielding.

If you think the drive would be able to come out again, then don't bother swapping it to the new drive.

Ok, thanks

BTW it looks like this

Does not even look worth the trouble of taking it off and putting it on the new drive.

Glad I could help.
