Best Headphones/soundcard..?

post #1 of 10
Thread Starter
I'll probably be getting a Clevo D900T based laptop.
Is it's build in sound card any good? And if it is, It's got
- S/PDIF Digital output (5.1 CH)
- Headphone-out Jack

What would be good headsets to go with those?

Or woudl it be better to get a seperate sound card? such as a:
PCMCIA Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS for Notebooks
or a Sound Blaster 2 NX External USB Audio?
And again what headsets?

I am looking for fairly descent sound, doesn't have to be perfect, but I don't want crap either

The built in soundcard is trash. Not even worth putting it in IMO...Clevo could have put in something cheaper for better quality stereo sound than this useless "jack of all trade" crap.

I think an external or PCMCIA sound card is a must.

Consider:

* Audigy 2nx
* Echo Indigo
* Creative Audigy 2 PCMCIA

And for ultimate quality...with an ultimate price

* Headroom Bithead
* Meier Audio Porta Corda USB

For the best solution :

* Xitel (www.xitel.com) USB link -> stereo amplifier -> headphones/speakers

There are other solutions (m-audio etc.) which are good...but they are loaded with features that you may or may not need.

Sennhieser, from my experience, is 100000% awesome.

I just bought a pair of Sennheiser MX400 earbuds (yay!). Unfortunately, their just as responsive/sensitive as my old earbuds, even though they're rated at 32 ohms impedance (iirc, a pair of 32 ohm impedance headphones that I have were much less "efficient" or whatever you call it than these earbuds). So, as a result, I can hear the hiss of of my onboard i9300 sound. Except, now it's even clearer hissing than my older lousy earbuds, lol.

So I'm either going to live with it and start ignoring it, or get a cheap discrete sound solution (probably an EAX equipped one, cause I'm a gamer, as well).

Got Senn HD-580's off ebay for half the MSRP. Loving it. Such good sound and soooooo comfy! I will be building and amp for them soon

there is already a big thread about headphones, in fact its stickied. http://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=14575

For a pcmcia soundcard, depends on how well you can hear if you cant tell the diffence in sound quality between onboard sound and a soundcard then i dont think you'll be needing a pcmcia soundcard.

Shure headphones are NOT meant for production. I love them for my iPod and they work great for IEM's(though the have to have an interesting eq to sound right), but I would never use them for production. Go for some Sennheiser HD's or some high end Ultrasone's.
For the Soundcard, I have an Echo Indigo IO and love it. I also just ordered an M-Audio(not in love with them, but they're good) Firewire 410 that looks very promising.
