5680 @ Knoppix 3.3-2003-09-24-EN: 'Only one processor found'

Hello everyone. Just gave Knoppix a try. I am a linux noob, so I am out of words; WOW.

I was just curious, though. During the boot process, Knoppix displays an error saying that only one processor was found, even though HT is properly enabled in the BIOS. Is there a flag I have to launch Knoppix with to make it work with SMP? I really noticed how there was only one thread being used when my mouse was SLOW to respond while Knoppix was cranking away, formatting a home directory image on one of my FAT32 partitions.

Ideas?

Thanks.

Mikhail

P.S. Just as I was going to post this, someone else posted about Knoppix and a 4070, LMAO.

If i'm not mistaken, knoopix does not include the smp kernel. That's why Hyperthreading is not functioning.

Knoppix detected two processors on my Toshiba 17" 2.8Ghz HT laptop...

why didnt it work with your 5680's ?? where'd you get the iso from??

I got the latest iso via BitTorrent from Knoppix.net. Everything else works so I doubt its the ISO.

And yes, it should support SMP. However, I have snooped around the net and found people complaining about the same thing. Those who had HT-enabled P4s had SMP support work on the second last release of Knoppix, but not on the last.

Any ideas?

P.S. If it would help, I boot Knoppix with the following: knoppix lang=us screen=1600x1200 config=scan home=scan (the latter two are for detecting the permanent home directory I have set up and the settings I saved; that reminds me, since I have set up the permanent home directory on my HD, do I have to save my configs as well every time? Or are they saved in the home directory anyway?)

P.P.S. Heres a quote from Knoppix.net: "I have a dell 2600 box with two xeon cpus, when I boot it with knoppix 3.2, it tells me that the machine has 4 cpus, and when I use 3.3, it just tells 2 cpus." ....... WTF?!

Bump?

i don't know knoppix too well, but if it worked with the previous minor revision, then why not just use that?

your user-specific configs should be saved in the home directory. i don't know if you have any configs in /etc that need saving though.

that xeon thing is just the same problem as yours; xeons have had hyperthreading for some time now. so if he/she has two physical xeon processors and HT turned on, each physical processor would emulate two logical processors, so four total logical processors as seen by linux. but the hyperthreading didn't work in the latest one, so he/she's back to just two physical processors.

Yeah, I thought so. Oh well, I'll just keep with it until the 2.6 kernel is here . I dont do much work on Linux anyway; its just for monkeying around for now.
