Various Z71v Questions (Mod, keyboard, etc.) - Page 3

Well, putting on a thick layer of thermal grease is never good... I haven't had a chance to take my laptop apart and check with a piece of paper, but I'll probably do that today.

EDIT: I ordered some AS5 from Newegg, hopefully it arrives before I have to leave for Florida next week... ;_; Same with an extra gig of RAM that I was waiting to be restocked. I'll probably stop at CompUSA while I'm here (New York) or in Florida to check out those thermal pads. I'm still debating whether or not I should try copper plates... but I'm worried the thermal pads will buffer the heat, not absorb it. :x I think I'll try it with and without the thermal pads, to see which yields a cooler temp...

So smilepak, I guess there was a misunderstanding. When I screw the HSF on tight, I can slip multiple sheets of paper between the GPU and heatsink.
REALLY?!

Hmm there might be something wrong then. When I screw the HSF on there right (w/o using the thermal pad) I CAN NOT slip a piece of paper through it. It was pretty tight.

So with a thin layer of AS5, it actually hit the HSF on mine.

MIne does not touch either - it needs the thermalpad. On the one I am making, I will thicken this so it will touch for sure.

One interesting thing... if I have the GPU set to "Max Performance," the CPU temperature jumps to about 52... at balanced its at 49. Wow. That must really be spreading a lot of heat around... :x

Huh, that's nothing. After running Rome Total War for a couple hours CPU temps are up to 65C. Then again I've got the video overclocked to 300/550 so that would add the heat I guess. We've really got to fix the crappy video cooling.

i wonder...

if some of the heat in there to the video card is from the intel wifi..that thing get hot.

How on earth do you check the GPU temp? I've been looking EVERYWHERE for an app that doesn it!
the 6600 go doesn't have a temperature sensor. You can't check it.

nvidia GO 6600 does not have a temp sensor...

nvidia 6600 GT does. However, it require a firmware mod to activate it.

This is on the desktop, though. As in, no activity...

EDIT: Wow, GPU really does effect the processor. Like I said, nVidia has three options: Battery Optimized, Balanced, and Max Performance. On Max Performance, the middle-underside of the notebook is lukewarm, but the processor speed jumps around 51-52 idle. At balanced, the bottom of the notebook isn't warm at all... in fact, it feels just like the case would if the computer were turned off! My CPU temps also hover around 47*C now. I'm only guessing that on "Battery Optimized" they would drop even lower.

I really hope you release that heatsink soon! ;_; THis one seems to be dissipating heat all over the case!

I will prob have one done by the Thursday after next week ( I am off til the 18th) And if all goes well, I should have some ready for beta testing not long after that.
BTW have you seen the concept design and what the original looks like under the cover? See them here

If it works well and I still have my z71v I'll probably get one.

In regards to the intel vs atheros question.. i have both (atheros via asus wl-120g). I didn't notice any difference in battery life or temperature. (Note that the wl-120g mini pci is about 2-3 mm higher than the intel, and it BARELY fits in the z71v).
As I remember (and my memory is getting bad) the wl-120g is a Broadcom Chip NOT Atheros. And the Broadcom stuff is just a little better than Intel IMHO. LOL

Look here for some pics comparing the Intel 2200bg and the Atheros CM-9.
Oh yeah!! duh. You're right, it's a broadcom. My mistake. Blech.
Does anyone know where I could pick up one of those Atheros cards in Canada? I've looked around a bit with no luck. I'm trying to get rid of as much heat as possible in the laptop and I must say the Intel 2915 heats up pretty good.

try ebay I just picked one up for 40$

Just posted pictures here of the prototype heatsink for the gpu. I am waiting on some fan samples and then I should be able to test it out.
Very very nice... so you're trying to use a different fan altogether?
Yes, I want it to be a complete swap. No changing parts. That way if you have warranty problems, you can just put the original back in.
