Latitude X1 Review - Page 2

Well, hold on there for a while partner...

I just got 1 out of 2 of my x1 and this one is crap. The display has a light leakage all the way to the top. Screen looks like it has SPARKLES just like my XPS2 has. One good thing about it is that it is soooooo light.

I will have to wait for the other one tommorow to confirm. I hope this one that I just got is purely crappy system and the other one that is coming is in good condition.

Ok. Opened it up and the hard drive is defenately smaller than the regular notebook drive. The width is excatly the same size as a pcmai card as tall as two of them stacked together. Keyboard is great. The LAppy actually feels fast and not as slow as one of those celerons. Only thing that is making me want to return it is the screen.

Is it really so dimm as it was mentioned in one review?
I thought that 170cd/m2, contrast 90:1 (the numbers taken from on a published German test) and high resolution would ensure good quality.
BTW, I returned Apple 12" powerbook earlier this year, one of the reasons was the screen
(it was around 140cd/m^2 and lower resolution than that of dell X1).

I got mine a couple days ago, and I'm getting some light leakage. I'm not sure if it's the normal amount or if it's bad, but I can notice it a bit even in Windows using the classic start bar.

The overall quality of the screen is pretty crappy. The lighting is not uniform, and the viewing angle is terrible. The screen looks washed out from slight angles. And when viewing it from the front, portions of the screen look washed out until I move my head, then the portion that was washed out is clear, and the portion that was clear is washed out.

I wonder if I just got a bad screen or if this is common throughout the series.

Mine is fine (YMMV). It's plenty bright for a matte-based finish screen.

its actually brighter than the 700m but it has more of a bluer tint on the screen. It's actually growing on me so Ill give it some more time and we'll see how it goes.

is the screen a truelife type like the 700m?

I made an experiment and restricted my 2GHz PM 755 processor to 1.1GHz. Then it was possible to undervolt it to 0.796V (and 0.700 at 600 MHz) which is, afaik, well below the specifications of ULV processors. I used the last version of RMClock for this purpose
(by deleting the processors speed steps above 11.0x).

If your friend got extra 15 mins of battery life from the original 2.5 hours on the small battery, it is about 10% drop. Using RMclock it is usually possible to gain 10-20% more
of the battery life and to reduce the heat respectively.

I am curious up to which voltages your friend was able to undervolt ULV 1.1GHz processor?
What is the minimal clock in the speed steps - 600MHz?

In view of my experiment, I actually don't quite understand what is special about these ULV processors, how they are different from the standard processors undervolted and underclocked.

It would be interesting to know the temperatures measured by mobile meter on the ULV processor under heavy load. Does the case of Dell X1 ensure a good passive cooling in this extreme situation? BTW, what is the case made of? Is it really a magnesium alloy (wow!) as it is written in the above review? I read somewhere that the Samsung Q30 original is made of magnesium alloy, but I was not able to find this information about Dell X1.

If someone knows about the overclocking of ULV processors, please write a comment!
I don't understand these ULV processors either. What are their default voltages? I have my 1.5Ghz down to 0.988v and 600mhz at 0.732v.

no.

@MitchellO

M7333 ULV processor 1.1GHz has the voltages 0.84V -- 1.00V and takes 5Watt. I can't give a link to this because I have just written it down from some article.

hi

i bought a sharp mm20 a few months ago and really regret it now that I see that the x1 is such a nice machine.
I'm not really into gaming, but I'm missing an occasional warcraft iii match online, so i was wondering if you could tell me if that game runs in a playable manner in the 1024x768 resolution?

in what resolution did you play world of warcraft? 1024x768? since u say the framerate goes down to 10 if youre in a city, what is it like if you're in a raid or fighting against monsters...

would be nice to answer these questions as I'm seriously thinking about selling my mm20 in order to get an x1

thanks

My 1.5Ghz is now at 0.956v (yes, less than the default 600Mhz voltage!)

Can the 700m screen be put into the X1 screen considering that they are both DELL and the screen size is the same?
Good question I am also thinking about. No idea, if it is possible.
This one might be of help: Dell™ Latitude™ X1 Service Manual
http://support.dell.com/support/edoc...n/sm/index.htm

Please let us know if you find a solution!

BTW, the resolution of 700m display is 1280x800 i.e high than that of X1,
I don't know if it may create a compatibility issue.

Added: I guess this is a producer information on 700m displays:
http://www.auo.com/auoDEV/products.p...=11&items_id=2
It would be useful to compare it with the information on X1 display (e.g. the voltages).
I don't have a clue where to find this information about X1 displays.

I thought both the X1 and 700m had 12.1" WXGA (1280x800) screens? Is the X1 one really that bad? Does anyone know more about speedstep on the ULV 733? I can't find documentation anywhere and I'm wondering about the steps, etc.
unfortunately, x1 has 1280x768 (only).

Warcraft 3 runs very well/smootly at 1024x768 with all settings put to high! Its a 2D RTS so it shouldn't have any problems with integrated.

I tried to install a 700m screen in my X1 with no luck. The 700m's screen is 1mm-2mm larger in each dimension and the screw holes do not line up. The X1's screen is quite a bit lighter too.

Too bad. I know that it can be quite a bit of work just getting the 700m LCD removed since the speakers/green LED bar are integrated into the LCD panel.

So whatever became of the LCD-less 700m?

It's whole again. Removing the display is pretty easy on both machines.
