Switch to Apple Now, or Wait?

Thread Starter
Hello,
I used to have an Apple portable a few years back when OS X (10.2-early 10.3) came out. I found myself a little frustrated by the lack of choice in software and went back to the dark side. For the last six months I've been contemplating the switch back to the MAC. OS X, (Tiger) looks great and the applications have grown tremendously. I was considering the PowerBook G4, 12" with a SuperDrive. I have some older OS X software that needs some upgrades but that's just about it.
Now, with the Intel chip switch I'm very unsure. Some people say, "go for it now," while others say that it doesn't matter what Steve Job's says, developers are going to concentrate on the Intel versions of their software. Anybody have any suggestions?
My other concern is being able to play all my Windows Media Player (10) files and formats. I've read that the MAC version is stuck at 9 and does not do a great job. I have tried the VCL Media Player but when I compare it to WMP 10 some of the quality is lost. Does anyone know if Flip4Mac works any better?
Finally, I've been considering buying from Amazon.com because of the $150 rebate. I've also looked at MacMall. The Apple Store is great however it's also the most expensive.
Thanks for your time and ANY input would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks a Lot!

Welll what exactly are you looking to get/need? iMac, eMac, mini, ibook, etc.?
What are you looking to do? Video editing, photo, rendering, etc.? How much are you looking to spend?

If you are just looking to dabble with a mac again, I super suggest the mini. I bought one when they came out just to fool around with. And now I am hooked. Personally, I think I would rather have an iBook (I am unforunately using my lappy right now as I play some xbox), but I am super hooked on the awesomeness that is the mini. At the price, you really cannot go wrhong- especially if you already have a nice display already.

developers will concentrate as much as the NEED to on intel development. one of the nice things about how Apple is doing the transition is in how software is being transcoded. while some programs might not be ported right away, the vast majority that are invested in the Mac platform (and also have the more complex codes to translate) will be ported to xcode before being translated to the x86 format. once the xcode development is done/polished the ability to have support for both platforms is relatively easy. the issue previously was that not everyone was using xcode to develop their software and were using older OS 9 compatible code. long story short, once the applications are xcoded, there's really very little work to be done to code to x86, and obviously to have the program ready to role on the PPC platform. hence the idea of dual platform coding as laborious goes the way of the dinosaur. again, once the xcode is polished there will be very little work to do to provide support and development for both platforms. have i beat the dead horse enough yet?

i'm also guessing that much of the new software u r referring to for OS X is likely been developed in xcode.

i'd say the 12" PB is a sweet way to go, especially from amazon. as a stock machine u get a decent amount (80GB) of storage @ 5400 rpm along w/ bluetooth so i'd imagine most ppl's upgrade concerns would be taken care of. the only suggestion i'd have would be to wait till the 7th coming up as there's likely to be new product introductions. it may be just a mobile phone or non-notebook intro, but hey, it's only 2 days.

I would say go for it now. I have heard that some software will run slower on the mactels, but I am not sure how slow. I would just get the 12" PB now. If your a college student you can get the discount, plus get a free ipod mini, or $179 rebate. I don't know if it is still going to be more expensive then amazon but apple has a pretty good deal going on. Wait till after the 7th, just in case some new notebook products are released. The ipod mini deal isn't going away anytime soon.

the student package deal beats amazon's rebates across the board for the notebooks + ipods (even when paying a calculated 8.25% sales tax thru apple). if however one only wants the notebook or is not a student, then amazon is the best option. yes i was bored and had a calculator in my widgets.
