A little while ago I was asking around to see if anyone knew whether or not painting your laptop would void the warrenty, and I ended up emailing Dell due to a lack of certain knowledge of the subject; here is what I got back:
"I would like to inform you that Dell does not recommend customers to paint their laptops. In future if you face any issue with the top cover of the laptop and it need to be replaced, then if it is found that the top cover is painted Dell will not replace the part. "
So as it stands, cosmetic changes dont necessarily void your entire warrenty, but it would seem that if you had any issues involving the parts of the chassis you modified, Dell would not fix or replace them.
I think i'm going to have a vinyl made instead

Checkout eBay as I saw a number of them listed last week. Then if something dies simply put on the original part so Dell doesn't know.
