Question: using an Apple 30'' on a PC laptop

Hi everyone,

been searching the forums about this, but I can't find ANYTHING. I really, really want to use one of the new apple 30'' monitors with a PC notebook. Problem is, except for the new powerbooks with a modded 9700 to support dual link, I haven't found a PC notebook that supports the full rez of these babies (2500x1600). Anyone with any ideas/suggestions/news about any PC laptop that could do this?

Thanx in advance, tdx

There is no way as of today to do so with a laptop PC. If you find an engineer, maybe that person can transplant a dual link 9700 from Apple to your PC? I highly doubt it as even desktop apple PCI cards can not be used on desktop Apple's.

Apple is going Intel. So maybe in the future? I too would love to use the 30" on a PC laptop.

THe max resolution the 6800 Ultra (the most powerful laptop card available) is 2048x1536, and this holds true for any of the lower cards. I think even most desktop cards hold this as their max...

And exe, if you were smart, you'd realize that Apples are already 70% x86.

Well, this is a notebook general, so I don't see why I'm in the wrong thread... And why 'wrong post'?

He was saying that he posted the wrong post in the wrong thread, not you.
To my knowledge the only way that apple can even get their 30 inch cinema displays to work is with two cards in sli or some other form of "work together" mode. They even state it on their website.
I'm afraid that without a dual card setup you're probably going to be running that display at a lower res than it's capable of running.

how does chip architecture have anything to do with video card in relation to pumping out this resolution??

It means the resolution not only requires the bandwidth of two DVI-D links, but also the power of two VPUs, each creating half the image.

Actually, not to contradict anyone, but the only technology required is a dual-link connector (I think that's what you were reffering to, digitalpunk - correct me if I'm wrong). If Apple can cram a 2-year old 9700 in their 15'' powerbook and have it work with the 30-incher, then it's totally possible to do the same with the current crop of gfx card for pc laptops. But I guess neither nvidia nor ati have bothered. Oh, well, maybe the next gen.

By the way, has anyon had any experience running monitors such as these in lower resolutions (2000x1600)? Maybe, if they dont look too bad, I could use a setup like that while waiting for a new gfx card.

Dual Link is available for nVidia's Quadro FX class of processors. They could easily get it to work, but they just see no reason to implement it on home class VPUs, it seems.
