My first dead XPS2 component

...is my 60GB 7200k Hitachi HDD

The person using my XPS2 ran the battery all the way down to zero and I guess the power settings weren't set to auto-shutdown at 3% or whatever.. They told me it just turned off. I figured, ahh that's not good, but everything should be okay.. Go to fire it up this morning and I get a blue screen with unmountable_boot_volume. restarted a couple times and no change.. so I run the diagnostics and the HDD fails the test.. So Dell is sending me a new HD.. Guess I can do that *clean install* now since the new disk will be blank.. What a way to start a new workweek..

That sucks, atleast Dell is sending you a new HDD.

I hate IBM/Hitachi drives. My history with them has bween 100% failure. Once Seagate comes out with their 7200rpm drives I will be replacing mine

Congrats, you've just suffered a head crash!

I didn't believe it was possible (on unexpected powerdown) on modern notebook drives...well, I guess you showed me!

Why do you think that the HD will be blank? Did Dell tell you that? Usually, it's similar to the HD that came with your machine--with all of the Dell stuff on there.

This is incorrect. You will be sent a blank HDD unless the system is less than 120 days. Anything over 120 days, you will receive a blank drive. As for your software on a replacement drive (if you qualify) you should state to the technician that you require a HDD w/Image or at least your IMAGE CDS. Make note that again, your system MUST be less than 120 days old or the image specific to your customized system spec will no longer exist for DELL to send you.

I have let my i9300 with the IBM/Hitachi 7k60 drive in it run all the way down to the point that it just shut off and did not have any problems. I think it's just a coincidence.

I try to run my battery completely out and then do a full charge about once a month to keep it conditioned.

Sorry to hear about your drive.

Thanks for the clarification. But is Ripper3785's drive over 120 days old?
I've always gotten a blank drive, even if the existing one was DOA. This is the first I've heard of the 120-day thing. Is that new, or a laptop only thing?

Yes, they told me it would be blank.. And told me I will be reinstalling the drivers, OS, etc.

No it is not over 120 days old.

I am not calling to clarify whether it has an image on it or not. Not worth my time. Already wasted too much time on the phone with them. I'm indifferent re: whether its blank or not.. If it's blank, I can do a clean install... if it's not, I can get back up and running quicker... I just want the drive ASAP..Should be here today or tomorrow...

So...what happens if you get a hardlock like I've gotten hundreds of times on a desktop where you either hold the power button in or just unplug it? Can you hold the laptop power button in and it will shutdown?
Sure... either that... or unplug and remove the battery... either way...

Yeah, I don't like IBM/Hitachi's either. I've got three 3.5" - 60GB ones which I bought a few years ago and two of them has been exchanged (warranty) once each due to hardware failure. They suck but I'm sure they've gotten a little better. Anyway, this is why I ended up with my superquiet Samsung SP.
