Differences b/w Turion and Centrino

Thread Starter
Ok, i've read the threads on the turion and read about centrino's capabilities. I know they are suppose to be the "mobile" processors, but what 'exactly' is the differences b/w the two. WHich would you prefer when choosing a notebook? Pros/Cons of both chips. . . ect.. . . .

Well I am new to the Turion so I will let someone wiser tell you about that but basically I know a bit about the power consumptions of each. If you want I can show sources, but off the top of my head here goes: The Turion exists in 35W and 25W versions, with the greater power consuming one being somewhat more powerful to use an inadequate term to compare the two. The Centrino started off with 27W and 12W versions and is now at 21W and 7W for the regular LV Pentium M and the ULV Pentium M respectively. LV=Low Voltage, ULV= Ultra Low Voltage

The LV lines come in speed between 1.6 and 2.0 ghz nowadays IIRC (although older versions were lower clocked) and the ULV is currently between 1.1 and 1.2 ghz. A 1.6ghz Pentium M will outperform a 2.8ghz P4 in some tests. Yeah, they are that good.

So, correct me if you think I am wrong and I will then check my answers and someone please explain a bit more about the Turion which as I have heard is actually a 64bit CPU.

the centrino is 2mb cache while the turion is only 1mb cache and i think one of the turion processors is even 512kb
post #4 of 11
yeah but the turion has a built in memory controller and 1600mhz hypertransport

Turion is 64bit and backwards compatible... while Centrino I believe is just 32bit... backwards compatible means can do 32bit too:P... 64bit is or was mainly used for servers and stuff....:P

also just for kicks.... one is made by AMD and one is made by intel.... I preffer AMD:P

Here's a good benchmark comparison between Turion and P-M

Slap 'em into a bloody desktop motherboard and call it a day? No thanks. When I see a difference in total power consumption that's HIGHER than the TDP of the processors in the test (101W vs 130), I get suspicious.

Wow are those tests off... the Pentium M shouldn't OWN in that many tests...

can anyone provide a real review of the turion?
the difference between the two is huge. They are completely different architecture with different strengths and weaknesses. IMo, the p-m will have slightly better battery life, but it lacks 64-bit and is weak in FPU performance. Relative to games and stuff, they are about equal but I swear the amd 64 are more responsive.

I would like a 25w turion with a very nice gpu for a cheap price.

I think the P-M and the Turion are both fine performers. I don't understand why so many people think that a x% difference in performance makes something "better" than something else, especially when you couldn't tell in the real world. All this worrying about the differences......
