After a period of research, I plan to buy the nw8240 which quite fit my requirement.

Sonoma 2.13GHz
2GB DDR2 533
60GB @ 7,200rpm
DVD+-Burner
15.4" @ WUXGA (1920x1200)
FireGL V5000

I hope owner or experienced notebook user, would you mind to give me some advice on it ?

Thanks

First: Check that you can handle the screen. Resolution is very HIGH. The colors on my nw8240 are totally of the charts. Very "cold” colours (I've made a post about this). View angle vertically isn’t good either. Besides this, it is a nice machine.

Second: The fan is quiet, but is always on.

I have a support case with HP about the screen. They are looking into it because they though that the colours on my machine where a bit wrong too.

You maybe should have a look at the lower Ghz and lower screen resolution also for this machine.

But the CPU and Screen Resolution is part of the reason for me to consider it.

Can give me more advice ?

Thanks

ok, sorry... I'm a TOTAL n00b when it comes to this model.. but how is the FIreGL for gaming? (HL2, Doom3, Battlefield2 type games...) what's the x700,x800, or nvidia equivalent?

also, is the DVDRW lightscribe enabled?

thanks... SERIOUSLY debating getting one of these...

From what I know from here, FireGLV5000 is a Professional-verison of X700 with DDR3 and perform better on 3DMark. So I suppose it should perform as well as X700 and Go6600.

I am looking for more advice too ...

thanks dalee! appreciate it. the last thing I'm holding out for is info on the dvdrw drive... VERY interested... it's between this and the Acer 4000
post #7 of 16
i have that configuration except for a 2ghz instead of 2.13. i'd be interested if hp uses the same WUXGA brand screens for all of the nw8240s. Maybe its just because I haven't really seen a WUXGA screen before but i dont think the colors are "cold". (however, id like to know more info on this). The video card runs on an x700 chipset and scores a little bit higher in 3dmark. I overclocked the v5000 briefly and it showed pretty promising results assuming you have good cooling. the dvd drive is slow in my opinion, they're shipping a new one to me (perhaps its just mine). other than the screen issue some are having and the dvdrw drive, its a great machine.

j19, How do you OC your FireGL V5000 ?

And do you know how much if I want purchase Multi-Bay HD ?

May I solely buy the Multi-Bay HD 'adapter' instead of the HIGH-PRICED adapter w/ Harddisk ?

Thanks

Usually HP has tried to rip you off in the business computer accessories, just like most other companies do too. My experience is that you cannot buy the multibay adapter separately, and that multibay hard drives are ridiculously expensive. For example, the price here in Finland for a 80 GB 5400 rpm multibay drive is €549 (it's the only option).

I overclocked just like any ATI card - powerstrip, atitool, anything that deals with gpu overclocking.
cool.. thanks for the info j19... as it's an ATI card, can it use the catalyst or omega video drivers? (one of my concerns was the driver support/new games).

Thanks...
that's one issue...no catalyst (i would doubt omega as well, but I haven't tried) drivers will work because though its technically an x700, ati's driver software detects it as a V5000 and refuses to install. its possible though, because of its similarities to the x700, there could be a way to circumvent that

I finally got myself the nw8240 !

Review later !
i was able to force install catalyst drivers as a mobility x700 gpu. my 3dmark score increased by about 125 points. download regular catalyst drivers from ati's site (5.6), then use patje's tool (http://www.driverheaven.net/patje/) and select mobility x700. (perhaps firegl v5000 will be added later). that's it, install.
