and while we are at it, what is the difference if any, between the X1 and X300?

You're gonna have to tell what you're going to be using it for before most people can tell you. The X300 is a graphics card.

If you get the X1 keep in mind that it doesn't have a fixed bay, you'll have to carry the external media drive with you if you want to use it.

I think that the 700m more closely resembles the IBM.

Mostly internet, not too worried about the graphics card or having to need an additional external drive, small size is more important, to use on the plane

If you're worried about battery life, CNET rated the IBM at 260 min vs 180 for the Dell. The following reviews might help. Just price wise the IBM comes out on top too.

Of the two you selected, I would take the IBM. The x300 is an older model Dell laptop they don't sell anymore that was basically the same as the 300m. The difference between the x300 and the X1 is the X1 is widescreen and newer technology. I agree with the person above, the 700m is more similar to the IBM.

Huh, didn't know about the X300 being a computer as well. Just ignore my statement about it earlier. The 700m doesn't have BT integrated, but if I remember correctly, someone got it to work in either the SD slot, or the PCMIA card slot, where it wouldn't stick out.

I cannot seem to find any details about what the amin differences are between the X300 and X1, other than being newer.

I'm aiming for a 12" and these two seem to fit my specs, my big Q is with full specs, which one stands out?

In this case, I'd take the IBM. It's cheaper, and IBM is supposed to be the best quality. I usually don't recommend IBM because it is usually expensive, but since it's cheaper, I'd take it. If you need the most portable thing you can get, though, get the Dell. It's about a pound lighter.

I just called Dell, the sales reps were clueless, put me thru to support who confirmed, the X1 is only marginally better than the discontinued X300.
I may go with the IBM, cannot justify paying $2500 for a notebook similar to what I already have (X300)

Yeah, I suggest you don't. It doesn't see worth it, especially when the IBM has the optical drive and everything. I'm assuming it's built in.

The IBM and the Dell both have Media bases where the Optical drives are housed, the IBM has DVD, but not a writer, and clock spped seems faster on the IBM, I cannot seem to find any other major differences

If you are talking about Dell's X1, it doesn't have a built in optical drive. If you are talking about the X300, I can't say anything about it since I have never seen it before.

IBM's are built stronger, and more durable, but can come at high costs. Dell's are not quite as strong and durable, but are built nicely, but you can get them extremely cheap using coupons(from Home, rarely SB). So if you compare it with the 700m, prices will be drastically different compared to the X1.
