VIVA! Atheros WIFI. DOWN The With Intel 2915 Hunk of Junk

Well to all those having issues like myself with Intel's 2915 Wifi card I must say that replacing has made my sex life better NO MORE SPEED DROPPING from 54 to 1 no more painfully slow connections!

I replaced the damn thing with an Atheros based generation 5 chipset and OH MY GOD! it works! it works! my XPS picks up Access points from Mars now! Well almost... but let me tell you that it sure looks like it!

Anyhow DOWN with Intel 2915. I have 3 different APs (Dlink, Linksys & 2Wire) at home and now all work like they are supposed to with this Atheros based GIGABYTE WIFI CARD. This puppy picks up everything. It is based on the latest Atheros AR5005GS chipset and supports 108mbs, extended range technology and is ONE chip that also uses way less power.

The only drawback is the wifi light stays on and Fn-F2 does not turn off the radio. BIG DEAL. You can use the tray icon to quickly switch it on or off. The management software that comes with it is JUST ONE PROCESS unlike Intel's which was like 5 and hogged more resources.

EDIT: FN-F2 DOES TURN OFF THE RADIO BUT NOT THE WIFI LIGHT.

VIVA! VIVA! Finally I have WIFI the way it was meant to be!

Nice. How hard are those to install? Similar difficulty to doing a desktop PCI card?

It's as easy as changing the memory. Open the compartment, unsnap the antenna pop out the card do the reverse for the install.

corn, where and how much? How's the range compared to the Intel?

Sweet, passive packet monitoring.

Glad that solved your problem, I still would rather have the Intel PRO card than the atheros, but Toshiba tends to use the Atheros WiFi chip with their laptops, works pretty damn good.

And you are right about the 5 processes the intel software uses, one of the reasons I uninstalled that POS. 5-processes just to run 1 program = lack of programming skills. Either way good job with the fix.

Is it just me or is the Atheros the same POS that Alienware is shipping in their 7700's?? The one in my Alienware 7700 couldnt pick up a signal 15 feet from the router.

The 2915 is just hot... I'm glad somebody was actually able to post their experiences. Is the Gigabyte card less hot, or is it literally unnoticable? I don't understand how INtel's card could get so hot....
