VIVA! Atheros WIFI. DOWN The With Intel 2915 Hunk of Junk - Page 8

Installed one today into my Latitude D410 (replacing an Intel 2915). There wasn't anything majorly wrong with the Intel, but I did get low signal strength and dropouts in certain parts of the house. The Atheros card is noticeably better, general network responsiveness feels "snappier", and the range has improved considerably. I can now use it all over the house with no problems, the problem spots get "b" speeds but that's perfectly acceptable. DIVX/MPG streamed files work fine too.

Using a 3Com 54g WAP with this - I could have got a better antenna or a WAP with better range but I prefer the WAP to have limited coverage, for security purposes.

I can also pick up a few more access points with this card

And on top of all this there's still the Xtended Range and Super-G 108 functions that would be nice to check out, I'll grab a cheap Atheros-based router for some testing.

All-in-all, a worthwhile upgrade and I'd highly recommend it.

For 108Mbit, I recommend the Dlink 624. (not the 624+, the 624) Its really good!

DOWN WITH CRAPTEL!
What router are you using that you experienced the speed drops with?? I didnt see you mention anywhere.

I still have the Intel 2200 b/c I didnt know there was anything better out there. I've always been able to pick up a ton of networks even out in the middle of nowhere. If I can get even more with a different card i'll switch.
I've never ever experienced speed drops or connection drops. Maybe im just lucky.

I bought a DLink Di624 and what a piece of crap that thing was. I couldnt keep a signal more than 3 feet away from the router. If it actually worked I wouldnt have cared, but the DLink just looks like a cheap product that someone manufactures in their basement. Linksys is the way to go.

I have a Dlink 624, 514 and 624+ and don't have signal probs frontier. Maybe you should try changing the channel? Doing that improved my signal.
It was pre-set on channel 6 and wouldnt let me change it, im not sure why.

Lets see....

2wire
Linksys WRT54G
Dlink 624
Dlink 524

Each with the same issues...ITS THE DAMN CARD

In the words of the comic book guy from the simpsons:

"Ooh, your powers of deduction are exceptional. I
can't allow you to waste them here when there are
so many crimes going unsolved at this very moment.
Go, go, for the good of the city."

not slagging you, just saying if we all did this the forum would have much shorter posts.

FYI, I have the D-Link 624 with Intell 2200...Router is about 10 Feet away through a wall, or around its about 30 feet. Rare drops, steady connection at 54mbs. However, I drool over the possiblity of going to 108mbs! Thinking about the Atheros!

Ok I was just asking man, no need to get all bent out of shape.

You sound like a disgruntled Intel employee

corn,

You do anything special to uninstall the Intel stuff? Didn't the Intel drivers come with the Notebook System Software from Dell. If it's as easy as uninstalling PROset, I'm all good there. I just know sometimes it is a major PITA to get rid of some of the running processes from startup without resorting to msconfig to get rid of them.

My card should be here in a week or so, can't wait to try it out in my i9200.

If you choose to keep your CRAPTEL you can just uninstall the software and keep the drivers. You would have to select MODIFY from the unistall menu for Intel pro set.

Yeah, we just design and patent stuff and make slave laborers elsewhere make them. Things like... long grain rice used through out asia, or CDMA system ala Qualcomm, or Ebay, MSFT, Google, or all those big pharma companies or those large banks that are in every major capital in the world ie Citibank, Goldman Sach.or even Nike sneakers... the list goes on.

Now who was it that wants to bring back 'Made is USA' microwaves raise you hand.

Out of interest what drivers are you guys using? The Gigabyte drivers that came with the WAIG02 didn't work properly, I got an error in the utility, can't remember exactly. I'm currently using the Atheros Wireless Driver Version 4.2.1.56 and Client Utility Version 4.1.2.25 which work perfectly.

BTW - I still have one of these cards spare if anyone's interested, new and sealed. PM me. Edit - now sold.

Client utility 4.1.0.161.31
Driver 4.0.0.167

Everything works fine, but perhaps I should upgrade. It looks like I'm a bit behind.

Can you post a link to the latest?

That's an interesting thread, my 9300 will be home soon and I was planning to get a better wifi card.

I'm not that technical, how do I do to get the bluetooth in addition to the Atheros? Do I have to install it separetely ?

The Bluetooth and wireless (miniPCI) cards are separate. Have a look here
