Another vote for the Atheros

I am writing this on my wife's Sony Vaio. Instead of the 2200 that came with it, I have my Gigabyte Atheros 5005 based WiFi card in it as a test.

Our computers sit right across from each other, but hers is the only one that constantly drops a connection or get's kicked by the 2.4GHz phone. Mine never looses a connection. Ever.

I've been using her computer for about an hour now and haven't had a single disconnect. (The telltale app is MSN Messenger going offline and back online all the time with the 2200.) I also have 100% signal strength whereas the 2200 usuall has around 60-70%.

I KNEW I should have ordered 2 of the Atheros cards when I ordered mine. Now I have to get one sent here to Brazil, and they have an import tax on computers and components. Crap.

Just got one of these bad boys , but the antennae plugs dont seem to fit tight on it for my xps gen 2 . Ive tried electrical tape but i cant seem to keep a connection if i move my laptop around. I was wondering if anyone else had this problem, it any creative ideas to fixing this. Thanks.

BTW, its the GIGABYE WI-AG02 802.11 b/g card

Well either you did not snap them on completely by pushing down firmly or your connectors have spread apart in which case some careful crimping with pliers is needed.

Eh, my Intel 2915 seems to be working perfectly fine. It gets a very good signal in all the building on campus, no disconnects either.

I spec'd my 9300 out with a 2915 and was more than happy with it. Just scored one of those Gigabyte cards from that eBay seller in the UK and it's kickass. I started finding APs that I didn't even know existed. Easy to set up and it logs into both my routers (home and work) in no time. Very impressive card. I'm not even worried about the 108 thing and won't get it anyhow because I'm using Linksys routers.

Don't be afraid about dealing with a UK seller. It took a week from the time I won the auction (buy it now), to the time it was delivered.

I have a slightly different Belkin. I have the MIMO router with the 2 antennae. The Atheros functions just as a normal 802.11g card would. I only connect at 54Mbps and the turbo on the Atheros isn't compatible with the MIMO stuff. I'm not sure if you'll experience much difference with the pre-N router.

Other than that the signal strength is excellent and I have had no dropouts.

Hmm... coming in on the tail end of this thread.

There seem to be several cards/chipsets listed within the thread. Can someone link to a US supplier of THE card that is suggested?

Are any of these it?

I'm pretty sure this is one of the suggested cards but it's the UK supplier.

Just in case more of you have come to realize that the 2915 & 2200 are the biggest POS ever created, the seller I bought mine from has a butt load listed including the 5005GS and 5006XS Atheros chipsets:

My Intel 2915 works perfectly. I've never lost a connection, and I've had 24/7 streaks of downloading that didn't have any problems, and played FEAR MP Demo for about 2.5 hours straight without lag or any other issues. I'm happy with it. I'm sure that not every Intel 2915 is good, but they aren't all bad either. In hind sight, I probably should've saved some money and got either the Dell b/g or the Intel 2200, since I've never even heard of an A router.

What's the difference between AR5005, AR5212,AR5213,etc...

Weird, I can understand the heat issue, But the connectivity has got me wigged out with the 2915 cards. I am using a Linksys WRTP54G for the router. Have perfect signal like a 1/4 of a mile down the street to the car or a building next door. Bars decrease but the signal is 54 Solid.

OFF topic, you know if there is any hack for the bios with this router which has voip built in?

Does anyone have a link to the latest driver that will turn on WIFI light? I'm using a WISTRON CM9 card that is also atheros based, I think the 5004 chipset and the drivers I've tried so fa works, but no light on the WIFI light.
