VIVA! Atheros WIFI. DOWN The With Intel 2915 Hunk of Junk - Page 14

The latest version of the driver from Gigabyte (I know it works for the 5005 chipset) turns the WiFi light into a network activity indicator. It's not fancy, it seems to blink at a constant rate when there's any activity, and then stops where there's none, but I can really get some use out of that.

The download release version is: 4.1.1.211.33
The driver version is: 4.1.2.38
The client utility version is: 4.1.2.35

Here's the link. (props to Stellus for the link)

I tried the driver. It worked but still no dice on the WIFI light. Oh well... Thanks though.

would the AR5006 be the latest and greatest from atheros that I could drop into my system?

It is if you want an a/b/g card. If you only want b/g, then the 5005 is the latest and greatest rendition of that format and about $15 cheaper at Oxford Bay (eBay). The "a" band is very rare and not useful to most WiFi users. It's like comparing the Intel 2915 to the 2200, except that Gigabyte makes much better cards.

for the latest Atheros driver:

N-joy.

That's strange. There's a whole other thread with people talking about this working for them. Might be an exact card/driver combo that does it.

Yeah, you are probably right on that. I'm not really using a Gigabyte card anyway, but the driver and util works just fine too.

Can anyone explain to me the difference between the AR5005GS 5th gen and the AR5006X 6th gen chipsets? Reading through the Specifications on these 2 pages I see that the 5005 is SuperG compliant but the 5006 is not although it has additional Frequency Bands. Which card would be better?

I'm looking at replacing the crap 56 - 1mbps Intel junk the i9300 came with but unsure which I want.. eBay for the Atheros AR5005GS or the *newer* AR5006X. Is newer really better? Any help would be great. Thanks!

I have a problem caused by my Gigabyte WIAH AR5004X based ABG card.
Suddenly my dell I6000 (BIOS rev A09) reboots, and only after a extended period of time.
Never experienced this with the 2200BG

I'm using the latest gigabyte drivers and xp sp2 btw. Could it be a good idea to use the atheros drivers instead?
Bump.. Anyone able to recommend which card would be better in my post above?
Well, in most situations you should get the "new and improved" version!
Yes in most situations that is correct. However that is not always the case. For example I want the SuperG 108Mbps feature which is available on the 5005 but I dont know if it is on the 5006. The data info on the Atheros site only states that the 5006 chipset supports a/b/g up to 54 Mbps and not 108. The data for the 5005 chipset says that it does support SuperG to 108Mbps. So newer is NOT always better.

One thing, my Gigabyte WIAH (Atheros 5004X) only uses 63 mW of transmit power when connected to a far away b network, I get a poor signal. How can I set it to use 100 mW transmit power?

I'm using the newest Atheros drivers, but microsofts client to configure the network.

Hello Adrenolin,

Looks like this oxford.bay chap on eBay must have read your post as the latest auctions for the 5006 seem to answer all your questions a/b/g all the way to 108Mbps

63 mW is the maximum you will get. This is due to the motherboard and not the Atheros drivers.

No way in hell to fix it?
