VIVA! Atheros WIFI. DOWN The With Intel 2915 Hunk of Junk - Page 16

Great thread guys. I just ordered 2 of the gigabyte cards from the guy on ebay. I have a 9300 and a 6000 and they both have the 2200 chips, they suck big time, to get connected I have to disable/enable several times and typical connectivity after an hour or so is 5 m/bit. Just pinging my router I get timeouts every so often, I think dell should replace the damn things.

Be CAREFUL when installing it in the 6000. The slot's under the damned keyboard, and make sure you get a screwdriver that won't strip the damn KB retention screws...

...keeping the leads from popping off is a tad more difficult with the 6000 as well.

Got the 5006 and it rocks on my XPS Gen2. Using with the WRT54GX SRX router. The WPC54GX card was great when it worked, but something kept causing it to make clicking sounds, stop working and cause BSOD. Almost like it wasn't seating very well. Anyway, the new 5006 has even better range, is faster, and now I don't have to worry about a card sticking out the side of the computer.

Hi

I just purchased a gigabyte wi-ht01 mini pci card off ebay

but it said it was based on the 5006X when the same seller also sold it saying it used the 5006 XS

I was wondering if giga-byte made two different versions, and if so how can you check which one you have

Thanks

Thanks again guys, Got the gigabyte cards installed tonight in the 9300 and 6000. Connection was a snap, seeing routers in my neighborhood I never saw before, works great. My intel proset got to the point where I'd have to enable/disable 5 times before it would connect even after a reboot. The new gigabyte cards connect as soon as I boot and is working flawlessly.

I wish I could get a refund/credit from dell on these POS intel cards...

Hello joep2k,

Whom did you get it from on eBay was it the seller called "Oxford Bay Direct" in the UK or someone else and if it was someone else could you tell me who.

Now as for the Gigabyte cards a contact at Gigabyte told me this Oxford... chap is the only person he knows of that is selling these 5006X based cards and just about any other Atheros card too!

Surely this can't be correct, only one person in the whole world selling 5006X's and so forth? replies here thanks
post #311 of 444
hi, it was the Oxford Seller,
I do believe it is a 5006XS, afterall, it includes super AG, which the 5006X doesn't

Best Router

I ordered a Gigabyte GN-WIAG02 from Oxford Bay on ebay. I need to get a wireless for it. What is the best wireless router?

I have read this forum and it seems the Belkin Pre-N and the D-Link 624 are the favorites.

What about these MIMO routers? Do they work with the GN-WIAG02?
I don't think the MIMO routers are out yet. The IEEE is still delegating over the standards and such.

My Dell card works fine, but I have one of the SuperG-enabled routers that can double throughput ONLY IF you use a D-Link PCMCIA card in yer laptop...can these internal Atheros cards use this technology and other 'doubling' techs to increase throughput? What about the dude above with the SRX-enabled router? Are you 'wasting' the SRX because of the Atheros chip, or does the Atheros connect at 108Mbit even though you're supposed to be able to use the router at full speed ONLY with other SRX products? TIA.
If the wireless card supports Super G or 108 speeds then it'll work with most common SuperG routers. Note that not all Atheros cards support SuperG so watch what you get and if your not sure ask . Cant comment on the SRX as I haven't used or looked at them.. however, remember that there is still NO 108Mbit/SuperG standard and everything is still kinda proprietary. Some more than others and may not work unless both the router and wireless card match..
If you don't use the giga-byte config utility, does the windows wireless config automatically use super g and XR??
THanks

So the atheros is alot better? HMMMMMM I get excellent signal every where in my house with my stock 2200 intel card in my 9300. Going to take it across the street tomorrow and see what I get at my neighbors house. I expect I will still get good reception. If not then I may get one of these atheros cards. I have the d link gaming wireless router and the full 108MB/s would be nice.

I just ordered an Aheros 5005 chipset card. $60 on eBay. The Intel's are "ok". I have had so many problems with it simply dropping the connection constantly. It doesnt matter where I am. My buddy who has a Linksys PCMCIA card, and my other firend who has the Dell TM, has NO PROBLEMS. Plus, I can wardrive, and crack some WEPS with the Atheros. It has also been known to give excellent signal strength which is a HUGE plus for me.

Does anybody have a preference of Drivers? I ordered mine offa eBay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...MEWN%3AIT&rd=1 Its for a Toshiba, but its the same thing as what u other guys r getting. Which drivers should I use on this beast? I will prob. load the drivers that come on the disc, but if theres a better one out there for the 5005GS, then lemme know!

I had far more luck with the latest Gigabyte drivers than the supposedly more recent Atheros ones which were a little funny about fast user switching and would sometimes hang and take 100% CPU. Check in the last few pages for a link to them
