maybe will be usefull for others too:

Toshibaґs own cards have a special firmware feature for switching off the card through a non-standard way,
To make the card work in a Toshiba manufactured after the year 2003, like the A10, A20, A30, P10, P20, 1130, 2430 ect. there is a modification required:
a small piece of tape is put on one of the interface connector pins to prevent the notebook from switching off the card. SEE THE ATTACHED PICTURE. >>> start counting from PIN number 1 (the single on the side of the card’s socket break) and cover PIN number 7 with tape. That’s it!

SIMILAR PROCEDURE WITH ACER: only compatible with ACER TRAVELMATE 240 with minor modification to the card (bit of tape on pin 13, as launch manager does not recognise the card.

also works for medion sim2000.
So your PC is not a Dell? That's the part I didn't catch...Glad you got it working...

I just ordered the Gigabyte Atheros AR5006XS Super G+A wireless mini PCI card 108Mbps a/b/g from the oxford guy.

Will probably have this card just before my new XPS M170 arrives

For those of you still considering getting this card the oxford.bay seller will shut down his store at the 14th and not open again until the 23rd! Sooo, get yer cards today
post #343 of 444
did any of you guys figured out how to change power output on the card? Mine shows 30mw with new drivers and 45mw with old, even though i put it on 100mw :S

i heard it might have something to do with regional settings but don't know how true it is...
i live in north america
North America should be higher than that, or thats what I thought. Europe generally has lower transmission levels and my card shows up as 63mW. I never chose a region though, I assume it detected it from Windows' settings

I posed that same thought on the Notebook General section and was told the idea was "ludicrous".

grrr, damn. So I ordered an Atheros AR5005GS Mini-PCI card for my 9300 to replace my Intel 2200BG, its out of a Toshiba, I got it offa eBay for $60. So far so good, but I cant use it to crack WEP keys, which was the primary reason I bought it!!! ARGH!!! The driver that is made to work with the Atheros card, which is like 3.0.1.2 or something, which is really old, doesnt work at all with this card. The newest driver for this card, doesnt allow me to use my WEP Cracking utils. Not sure of what to do! It will be nice to not get disconnected every 5 mins, but to crack WEP is a huge plus I really would like. Anybody have any ideas on what cards will support the older Atheros driver? If so, I will be willing to sell my un-used AR5005GS for like $60.

I'm having some issues with random timeouts while surfing and lag spikes in game even though the AP is less than 2 feet from my 9300. Is this the dreaded Intel 2915 curse?
Have you tried using a linux boot cd such as auditor for your wep cracking, I didn't even know that people tried it under Windows

FWIW: Latest Atheros driver posted at the link above...

Hey, that driver u posted above is for the 5006 series! I have the 5005GS! But hell I will give it a shot. Yes, you are dealing with the dreaded Intel 2915 curse, my recommondation, is to search on eBay for an Atheros wireless card.

Yes, Aircrack is ported to work under windows. The same is true for airsnort, however, I had to compile it for Windows, wasnt that hard at all. I dont think a Linux live boot CD will do me any good either, if it doesnt support the driver for me card here, then it most likely wont support it under Linux. Which, I honestly dont get because it does have the PEEK abilitiy, and it sure as hell is Atheros. I just want a card that supports it so I can use it!

This thread is so long.

What page roughly is it discussed on whats the best Atheros wifi card to buy, you go on ebay and you get quite a few from 20 to 70.

any advice on how to find the Best one.
omg.

I read the 24 pages of this SOB

Final Conclusion

2915 bad

Atheros good,

Gigabyte brand and Toshiba brand use Atheros Chips.

The one to purchase has model number WIAG02

GN-WIAG = Atheros 5002
GN-WIAG01 = Atheros 5004
GN-WIAG02 = Atheros 5005gs <~ second best
Atheros 5006X <~ bestest

now go children, Run fast and purchase! ...if you dont the evil intel 2915 will EAT you, In Very Slow. Laggy bites!

and damn you bastards, I wasnt planning on spending any more money!

Has anyone bought one of these 5006XS cards from the dude in Hong Kong?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ATHEROS-AR5006-X...QQcmdZViewItem

If so, does it work with the XPS2 and SuperG? I'm only interested in doing this for the extra speed at home, since I have no problems with my Dell miniPCI card right now...I used to actually plug in a D-Link PCMCIA card when I had to transfer 5+GB files over the wifi, as they did copy over twice as fast with SuperG turned on...it would be great if I didn't have to carry that around everywhere...TIA.

EDIT: actually, one part of the auction says 'Item Location: Ontario, CA' and then in the body it says 'item will ship from Hong Kong', so I don't know if this is fishy or not...?

for those of you looking to upgrade your card check out this thread.

yea, its sad to have to bust out the PCMCIA to transfer something. drives me nuts.

There are most definately linux drivers that work and support this card under linux. Just because some windows drivers don't work with features predominatly used in WEP cracking doesn't mean linux has these same limitations. Atheros driver support in linux is top notch

Yea, I have found that out. I am waiting until I get to work to DL a live Linux CD, Knoppix, looks very promising. If my stupid crap satellite internet connection didnt suck so badly, and have a fair access policy, I would do it here. O well, I am just going to try to crack my WEP here at home to see if it works. Dont feel like going to jail for war driving, and checking my e-mail. lol
