VIVA! Atheros WIFI. DOWN The With Intel 2915 Hunk of Junk - Page 21

Well, to truly get your mileage out of this card, you need to have a router with SuperG. As for the utility, yeah, it sucks, but that's why about 500 people have said "let Windows handle it" thus far.

Just started playing with my atheros card tonight finally and have some questions. I HAVE been reading many posts about the card here in the forums.

I am seeing that many are saying to just let windows manage the card however in just my short time of playing with the atheros client vs the windows default. It doesn't look like windows truely knows how to utilize the card. I have a couple open waps around me and with windows I can connect "wap A" with the usual very low signal I get from other wireless devices and it stays at 1 bar. When using the Atheros client utility I think it bumps up the power as when I connected to this same "wap A" it was showing 75% signal strength which I've never seen from other devices I use from inside my home.

The atheros client seems kinda clunky or maybe I just need to play with it more. Anyone using this util know how to specify multiple AP's? I can do a scan but it seems like it wants to setup a new "profile" for each new ap. I can edit the default profile and add ssid's but then I don't see where I can change between them? I guess if I have to do the profile thing or manually scan now and then if I'm in a new area I can deal with it as I want the client to be able to push the card for better signal strength when needed.

I am using the drivers that came with my card from the group buy seller. They appear to be from May of last year. I have looked at some of the many links posted but alot of them are going to pages that have changed or being redirected. I'm not that concerned at this point in the driver unless it in some way manages the capabilities of the card better.

Thanks for any feed back.

I just received and installed mine and love it. I do have one question. Do I have to use the included utility to use the SuperG mode or is it automatic. My Router is a superG router by the way.
Thanks in advance.

Is the Linksys WRT54GS with 'speed booster' considered 'super-g' ?

I prefer the Linksys/Cisco products because most of them use Linux as their OS and there are some amazing 3rd party Firmwares

This is somewhat related to my question...does anyone know for sure, if ANY of the expanded technologies/functions of the chipset are usable by windows without the actual atheros utility to control it?

I'm starting to get used to the utility...it could be loads better but like I said windows wasn't boosting the power to reach further away like the atheros utility does.

Just ordered my 5006!
Installed my 5006XS yesterday, and this is an upgrade I would recommend to EVERYBODY! Connection has been rock steady for almost 24 hours now, been playing online games and downloading through BitTorrent with no problems whatsoever!

Im going to put that Craptel card under the wheels of my car and run it over and over and over just smiling at the thought of it crushing!!

Latest Atheros OPTIONAL client utility linked above...

Thanks for the update. I was more or less looking for a confirmation that the atheros utility enables the full capability of the card while windows does not. This is what I found in the short time I let windows manage the card and testing just one far away AP. I'll install this updated util and check it out.

Got a problem, need solution quick. Let me know if ya think by replacing the 2200BG with Atheros could solve the problem.

Here I go, When playing game over my home network via wire OR wireless

Problem : CS:S is perfectly fine, no choke, no packet loss. DOD:S is horrible with packet loss over 40 thus render the game unplayble. battlefield2 gets drop connection every so often

DOD:S is MMMMUCH better over my neighbor's wireless connection, so does it via connection at work

I gave up trying to resolve the issue, I tried various Intel PRO driver from Dell and from Intel but didn;t solve the problem

BUT PLEASE EXPLAIN THIS TOO IF YOU CAN, if it was the Intel 2200BG then why is the connection still bad through wire connection via Broadcom netxtreme????

So the bottom line question is am I going to resolve the problem especially with DOD:S by replacing the 2200BG??

Thanks in advance for your input

It sounds like you have pretty much answered your own question. If your notebook network interfaces work well in most places but home...isn't it only logical to start taking a look at your infrastructure there? Try a differen't AP or home router or whatever you use or do some research on it and maybe update the firmware.

You know, I agreed with you to some extent that's why I didn't jump the gun right away thinking by replacing the NIC will resolve my problem....but if you read my thread clearly, CS:S plays perfectly fine while DOD:S really choke the bejuses out of my laptop over my home network, but aren't both games run on the HL2 engine??

My infrastucture is not simple since I got DSL, Voip, wireless all on one line, it goes like the following

DSL Modem -> Vonage VTech IP8100 (http://vonage.com/device.php?type=IP8100) -> Linksys WRT54GX4 AP(http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satel...VisitorWrapper)

My desktop works without a hitch though, so it might just be the 2200BG not compatible with the Linksys WRT54GX4 AP, am I making this way too complicated??

hrm...maybe a bug/flaw in DOD? Personally I would still check into updates for the router...maybe even reset/reflash it and/or try another router if available. I don't have any voip experience on a home network but maybe another thing to look at and monitor while trying to play. With as many variables as you have you could also start by disconnecting all devices but the machine your trying to play from to see if there is a difference. Then add things back to the network slowly untill you note a change if any.

i have the 2915 and have considered buying an Atheros but my connection probs aren't so bad that i felt it worthwhile and several ppl that have bought it said it wasn't that much different - though many are more than pleased...

anyway, i was having a really hard time connecting and i'm surrounded by several unsecured access points so i decided to put in an unsecured profile to see which one my system preferred... i have 2 D-Link routers but one of the unsecured ones was a Linksys and my card LOVES it!! lol

I have a D-Link PC Card that's an Atheros and works great with their routers...

so my question is do you guys with Linksys hardware, and any other for that matter, notice that your 2915 works well with it?

i'm trying to figure out how to find out what model Linksys my XPS likes or do they all pretty much use the same hardware across the board?

thanks in advance for any help...

i just started seeing these posts about the atheros cards. Is there a difference between the MiniPCI version or usb versions ? Is the minipci version easy to install with the antenna and all?

The Difference is that the minipci is internal, where as the usb will stick out the side or back of your laptop through the usb port.
