hmm, but is it a very noticable amount of less heat, or are you just saying that 'cause it has one chip? Obviously I know you say it works better in terms of connectivity and that alone is great. But if it really does have a large difference in heat, ie could get like that freakishly cool bottomed 8104 then I'd be very happy.

Dude 1 chip less heat, less power cooler bottom probably not as ram and other compenents produce major heat.

SOLUTION: laptop cooler......everything is always cool on the bottom.

Guys, my xps gen2 is on it's way. Did i make a big mistake only getting the intel pro 2200 b/g instead of the 2915 despite some issues some ppl are having? Some imput please

Ok, not to be GEEKISH but I played 8 hours of Battlfield 2 with absolutely no disconnection issues unlike CRAPTEL 2915 which could not handle the rockets up my enemys arse and disconnected all the time. All from the same exact spot.

Hey Serge...as you're in the GTA, you can try the 2915 as well as the TM 1450; I've got a couple different cards laying around in various Dell notebooks that you can test if you need to.

Thanks for the lightning fast reply! i can't even seem to remember how much it was to upgrade to the 2915 but i thought that because i don't really use the wifi everyday, (i'm mostly hooked up at home) i didn't think it would be all that necessary

The difference in heat output may be due to the fact that the base of the xps2 and 9300 is metal and the acers is probably plastic.

Nice compact card, just got it today and installed it. I just wish the drivers were online, I guess I shouldn't loose my driver CD. Anyway, I can get a sustained 54MBPS with just one bar missing of the 15 or so bars for signal strength. My Intel ABG card got me a fluctuating connection that had 2 of 5 bars most of the time even at lower rates like 11MBPS. This card rocks! Now I have to test out power consumption relative to what it was with the Intel. The card is a lot shorter, guess one chip design lets you do that and the back of the case is the same temp as under the CD/DVD drive when it is not in use. Some rep heading your way cornholio, for finding this gem...

So I don't have to go through 5 pages of this - let me see if I can summarize.

If I have a Dell XPS Gen 2 laptop coming with the Dell Bluetooth and Intel 2915 wifi card, I can get the Atheros Wifi card off ebay and replace the 2915 with it. I will then get cooler temps, longer battery, and better wifi connection?

I ask because I have the Intel 2200 series wifi on my current Sager that I'm upgrading from, and it sucks to put it nicely and so I'd prefer to stay away from the Intel wifi chips.

Cornholio, did you try the 1370 from Dell? I replaced the 2915 with this model and it's a huge diff between the 2 card, based in reception. I believe the 1370 is much better.
I used to experience disconects on a regular basis with 2915. Hmm, 1370 is cheaper then the 2915, go figure...

I will purchase also the gigabyte model, if you guys recommend it. Let me know what you think about this issue. Thanks.

I have not tried the Dell branded ones but I heard poeple have said they were good.

I wanted the latest technology so the GIGABYTE with the Atheros 5005GS was it. So now I have the best tech and a stable connection. It is personal chioce if the Dell will work for you get that.

STAY FAR FAR AWAY from the CRAPTEL 2915.

This card works!! Just got it today, popped into my I6000 (replaced 2200) and its a world of diffference. Batt life is still TBD, but i cant see it sucking the juice out of a 9 cell. went from the weakest point of the house at 1 mbps low-good (2200), to 11mbps low-good (atheros). closer to the router i cant see much difference except better sustained at 54mbps without dropping signal to lower mbps. installation was easy, drivers work.
I actually had to go to a usb adapter so i could put it closer to the door to get a better signal, which is totally counterintuitive. now i can get rid of that and just have pure unwired freedom. also this works better at the library and at school.
buy it, seriously.

UPDATE: spoke too soon...the driver is buggy!! some sites fail to open, not sure what is wrong, works well otherwise.

can you open these sites: foxsports.com and zappos.com and cnet.com?

I had some sites not work for me in the past and I figured out it was the QoS feature (Quality of Service). My card is set to have it on, but my router was set to off and I have no problems. I tried all of the sites you posted and it all works fine.
