Anyone have experience with the mobile Athlon 64 that could enlighten me on battery life? I am interested in the Compaq R4000 with a mobile Athlon 4000+.
Thanks!

I get 4 hours 15 minutes on a 12 cell battery(see sig). I had music, internet, and microsoft word open. the brightness was at dimmest and power options on max battery.

I thought they identified the Athlon 64 4000+ as a "mobile Athlon"?? I could very well be wrong. Is there such a thing aside from the Turion?

Wow, that is pretty impressive! Are you happy overall with the performance?

My friend has a R4000 w/ a AMD 4000+ (which is the desktop version, not mobile version)... and he says the battery life, on max settings w/ 8-cell battery (or whatever comes stock) is about 1 hour...

The systems is just excellent. The amd 4000 just blasts everything. Yeah the dual channel issue is there but thats about it. The gpu is just about hmmm average.

about battery life well depends on wat programs you are running and how you use it. I use my laptop on battery occasionally and am pretty impressed.
Why the heck did he get an 8-cell battery with the 4000+!?
yeah a good question but I supppose It wudda been good for me to go with the 8cell battery too. reason??

well I dont give a damn to battery life. I suppoes I will get around 2-30 at max which is sufficient

secondly that will make the notebook cheaper and lighter to carry. Depends on what the use is gonna be.

Shoot, I'm used to carrying around a crapload of books for Highschool, so I thought what the hell, an 8 pound notebook can't be that bad for College!

What could be added to this?

Says it all!

YEah and dont forget the possiblity to put in the amd fx-57 and the nvidia geforce 6800 through pci-e and it will beat the hell out of any damn notebook.

Wait a minute! Am I to understand that the r4000 can have another video card added? Can I ditch this piece of crap ATI thing?

If you have the 128meg ATI option, then you have the express card slot that will except a video enhancement card when they are released.

Holy crap! I'm glad I got the 128 MB card.

One More question. Sorry if this is already discussed somewhere else. (You're free to holler at me if it is!) I've heard that the zv6000's ad r4000's use desktop chips. Can I throw a standard desktop 939 pin chip in this notebook? Perhaps something like what's mentioned above.

*please say yes*

Others might be able to give you better advice.

I really don't know and I suspect nobody does.

Some have talked about swapping their desktop processor to see if the dual channel worked on the processor in these machines or the other way around.

But to my knowledge, nobody has done it yet.

There is a debate among some folks about rather or not we have standard desktop processors. The consensus seems to be they are desktop processors; I'm not as sure, but I'm not saying their not.

It might just depend on the bios.

Was that answer confusing enough?

I had a little chat with HP's tech support:

Patrick: Hello Nathan,
Patrick: Welcome to HP Total Care for Compaq Products. My name is Patrick. How may I help you today?
Nathan: I've got a question about the processor in my notebook.
Patrick: Sure go ahead.
Nathan: I've heard that you guys use standard desktop processors in the r4000 and zv6000 laptops. is this true?
Patrick: Can you give me the Serial Number of the notebooks?
Nathan: just a minute!
Nathan: <serial number>
Nathan: sorry, I'm typing on it at the moment.
Patrick: Yes, you are correct.
Patrick: Is that the only thing you wanted to know?
Nathan: So, waranty issues aside, can I purchase a boxed processor from amd and install in in my notebook?
Patrick: Please give me few moments while I give you the information.
Nathan: no problem.
Patrick: >The full-featured and de-featured HP Pavilion and Compaq Presario notebooks are available with the AMD Sempron processors. The AMD Sempron 3000+ features a 128KB L2 cache and 3200+ features a 256KB L2 cache and are available in the following CPU speeds:
>
>1.8GHz (3000+)
>1.8GHz (3200+)
>The full-featured HP Pavilion and Compaq Presario are also available with the AMD Athlon 64 processor. These feature a 512KB or 1MB L2 cache, and are available in the following CPU speeds:
>
>2.0GHz (3200+)
>2.2GHz (3500+)
>2.4GHz (3800+ and 4000+)
>The processors use OuPGA socket packaging, 939 pins.

So I didn't find out everyhing I wanted to know but this looks encouraging.

Don't you love it when you ask a simple question and they totally don't understand what you are asking?

What is you name? Yes, Buicks are made by GM.

Hmm, according to: http://fab51.com/cpu/guide/opn-64-e.html both the Athlon FX's and the Athlon 64 X2 4800 use 939 OuPGA packaging!

Anyone got an Athlon 64 X2 I can borrow?
