Ferrari 4005 Startup Failure

O.K. Here's something a bit disturbing. I just started up my Ferrari this morning and was greeted with a loud beeping sound. The blue tooth button was also flashing. Nothing appeared on the screen (totally blank) and, as far as I could tell there was no startup process going on (hard drive wasn't being accessed, etc.) The beeping would not stop (pressing the on/off switch had no effect). I unplug the A/C cord. The beeping continued. I finally turned the computer over and pulled the battery out.

Of course the beeping stopped then. I reinserted the battery and pressed the on button. The computer started up just fine with no problems.

Anyone have any idea what might have caused this episode? Geesh! I've only had the computer for seven days! Not time for a breakdown!

Funny, I had the exact same experience. Seems like a periodical glitch - but as long as it's in the absolute startup and not when running windows it may not be too serious a problem. I've had my laptop for 9 days now an have only experienced the beeping once.
Was it plugged in already when you started it up?

I've experienced issues with all 3 Acers I have own. Can't say its the same on my Ferrari 4005 since I've only had it for a day. But my other Acers plugging in my AC sometimes:

Ferrari 3400 [would boot up, soon as Windows started up laptop shut off]
Acer Aspire 2025 [Windows started up, CPU usuage was at 100%, no sound, too slow to use]

Both issues were fixed by shutting down completely and reinserting the AC. It happened a lot less after following this: Plug cord into the wall, then into the power block, AC into laptop.

Plugging these items in a different order, a spark would occur and I figured it must have short circuited or messed up the power management on the laptops.

Hi there,

Similar issue ish.

But I'm sure we will work it out.

All the best

That’s not a similar issues at all, richard.unwin2 and FerrariDark!!

My laptop was plugged into AC when the beeping occurred, but I had to remove both the AC cord and the battery in order to stop the beeping. Sounded a bit like a burglar alarm - maybe it's just a feature I haven't discovered yet?
haven't experienced the issue yet. And i hope i dont. (knock on wood)

I've started my laptop off battery. Started it off AC.
Then while running switched from battery to AC and from AC to battery.

If you guys figure out the issue please let us know. Have you talked to Acer about this?

My laptop was plugged in to AC. Had been for hours. But like the previous message I had to both unplug the AC and the battery to get it to stop beeping.

I booted it up several time over the course of the day today with no problems. Then, tonight, it did the beeping thing again! This time I just quickly turned it over, unlatched the battery and slipped the battery out then slid it back in. The beeping stopped.

Everything seems to be working fine. But I'd love to know what causes this. If it's just a glitch then it's not much of a problem. But if it's telling me that the hard drive is freezing or some other major problem I'd like to know what the problem is!

If it keeps on doing this I'll have to call Acer support. I just hate to go through that if it's nothing.

What happens if you hold the powerbutton for 3-5 sec. when this occurs? If it happens more then once, I know I would call Acer support.

I tried holding down the power button. It had no effect. The beeping just continued. The only thing that seems to stop it is disconnecting all power from the machine.

It's only happened twice and, as I said, I booted it up several times today with no problems until it happened again this evening. That's what makes it a mystery-hard to figure out what conditions are causing it to decide to have a beeping spell! :-)

I finally called Acer Support on this. First it's only fair to say that I'm very impressed that I got right in and was able to talk to a support person with NO waiting time! Compared to my past experience with other companies that's fantastic!

Acer said that the beeping usually indicates a power problem. The tech suggested that I do a "power reset" by unplugging the A/C cord and removing the battery, then hold down the power button for about 15 seconds.

That doesn't quite make sense to me and I'm skeptical as to whether this will do anything to solve the problem. But I'll post again on this thread if the beeping happens again or if the power reset seems to work.

Sounds like the same thing you have to do with a desktop to reset the Power Supply Unit.

The beeping occurred again for me today!! It was a bad crash this time - during an attempt to set the laptop into standby the screen went blurry (every second line was displaced). After that I got a blue-screen (still so blurry that I couldn't read it). And then the beeping started. - This time the beeping could be stopped by holding down the power button.

I don't like this at all. Hope this is not ever going to happen again!! After rebooting I got the message that "the system has recovered from a serious error" and after that I got directed to a Microsoft site that reported that the error was due to an ATI driver failure. (Seems logical, considering to the blurred display). Don't know if there is any relationship between the beeping and the ATI driver failure.

The system has been in and out of standby several times since then - without any problems.

If you are using stock ATI drivers I would contact ACER for further assistance. Maybe try what Spartos was instructed to do. Sounds like may a hardware problem possibly.
I am using the same version as is available on the www.acer.dk site. If it ever happens again I will contact Acer. Again I was running off the battery - I think my machine is more stable when on AC - this could be related to the powerplay switching modes. I don't like this at all.. I want my system to be 100% stable. Maybe I should take advantage of the 14 day return policy of the internet store where I bought it, but then I have to return it tomorrow, since its I recieved it on 28/6-2005.

Hmm happened tonight for the first time for me. I just unplugged the AC from the notebook and powered on with the battery and worked fine .

I've had this happen on my 4000 just a few times. It only occurs from a cold boot and each time is fixed by turning it off, removing the battery, reinserting it and powering back up. I don't know why it happens, though. The battery is very securely attached.

Since my original post last Summer it's happened maybe three times on my Ferarri 4005--about once every other month :-). Like you said it's always on a cold startup. But it's very rare so other than that I haven't been able to figure out what conditions cause it to happen. But the problem is easily solved by doing part of what the support tech said---pushing down on the power button and holding it for about 15 seconds. That turns off the beeping and then I can start the computer again with no problem. I haven't had to remove the battery since the first couple of incidents back in July.

It doesn't seem to be a serious problem. At least not with my machine. But if it happened all the time I'd definitely be back on the phone to Acer support about it!

My 4002 did that a few times. I just held the power button for 3-5 seconds and the unit would shut back off and when I pushed the power button again it always booted up fine. I sent mine to Acer for this issue twice and they replace the motherboard twice with no fix maybe a bios update will fix this?

Same thing happens to my 4005. I get it every second day. Just press the power button for 5 sec, it stops, then press again and it starts fine.
I suppose no use to send it to Acer. I'll just wait. BTW, it happens only when running on battery.
