Dell Inspiron 9300 Review - Page 2

Thread Starter
Ok well after the past week i felt it might be helpful to update users on my current problems with my 9300.

Ever since i got the 9300 it has been a little dodgey in starting up windows. I one problem where a file all of a sudden went missing which i was able to extract off the windows setup cd again and fix it.

The most recent problem i had was painful. I turned the computer on and after the windows loading screen disappeared which should then go to logon screen it gave me the dreaded blue screen of death. This was supposedly a problem with windows updates, notebooks and seems to happen in a majority of dell computers. After following several different methods of fixing this none of them seem to work.

I then tried the repair feature of windows which allowed me to log back into windows. However some drivers were not working correctly. Last night i gave myself a clean install of windows and did all the updates and so far fingers crossed it worked correctly.

Now i know that everybody on here recommends to do a clean install and get rid of dells bloatware for better performance but i also HIGHLY recommend doing it so that you don't get the problems i did. It also did give me over the 3000 mark in pcmark05 which is about 100 higher or more ( can't remember specific score) than with all dells bloatware. So everybody that gets an inspiron 9300 do yourself a favour and do a clean install it will cause you less problems in the long term. There are plenty of tutorials on how to do this. It is a very simple process.

its easy to overclock a video card on dell laptops as dell usually underclocks them to save power, check nvidia and ati to find the normal clock settings for your video card, you can comfortably overclock to them with no ill effects other than loss of battery life. Though I wouldnt overclock it unless you need to, if there isnt a need other than to brag, If performance isnt hindered, then dont do it or be conservative with your overclock.

Umm, Dell doesn't underclock them to save power... they're running at the stock clocks for the particular model of the video card that you have....

Donet

G'Day XM DUDE ,

I read your post on the Dell 9300 and that you were going to install Flight Sim 2004 and see how it went. My primary reason for buying a laptop is that I live on a boat and only have 12volt power. My primary use however is to run FS 2004 and so far you're the only person on the planet that I know of who by now will have done just that. So I was hoping you could tell me how you found it.
For Instance how is the screen with FS 2004, did you get a WXGA or a WUXGA, does the sim fill the screen or are there black bands as in some DVD movies and is it distorted, i.e. stretched up or sideways and what resolution do you run it in ?
Can you run it with everything maxed out without any stuttering and what sort of frame rates are you getting ?
I particularly want to fly the helicopters and to do that with any accuracy requires a pretty powerfull system which is why I plan on 1 and later 2 Gig of Ram, the NVidia 6800 256 Mg video card and I was planing on the 60 Gig 7200 rpm hard drive but I'm not sure about that now due to some negative reports I've read about it.
So anyway I hope yours arrived ok and that you're getting some good flight time up and if you are maybee you can find some downtime to let me know how it is.
I'm enclosing my e-mail address because on the boat I don't have access to the internet very often but I can access mail through an infrared connection between my mobile and old Inspiron 8100.

Regards,

Don.

Donet, I run Fs2004, and have been playing FS since v5.1. I've got a 9300 with 2.0GHz, 512mb, 100GB, 6800GO, WXGA
and it runs amazing. MOST of the sliders are set to max, although I do turn off all shadows and terrain mesh complexity is at 70% and detail distance at 100 miles. Keep in mind though that in the nvidia control panel I have full antialiasing and the first option for anisotropic filtering. The average FPS is between 25-30fps in the highest density metropolitan areas like Seattle or New York. It usually never drops below 22fps. There are no stuters, and the flying is super smooth. Afterall, aince I am a real licensed pilot I have to have fluid gameplay, because I hate stutters...

The only thing that sucks is that since its a widescreen, the panel is stretched, so you have to fly in Virtual Cockpit, which I prefer anyways in order for it not to be stretched.

FS2004 must not load anything from the HD then, or you got a high RPM 100GB HD. I'd say a large portion of these i9300 owners lie or refuse to tell about the stutter lag they do receive. Granted, the computer has no problems graphically, but it does have stutter problems if you play better games. The only exception would be high RPM, or lots of RAM (2 GB range).
