Cat 5.6s - Life Now Difficult?

Since Acer never likes to update their driver sets for the Radeon 9700 on the Ferrari 3200, we've all had to find ourselves some modified drivers. From Omega to using Patje's mod on ATI's cats, we've managed to get around it and get all the wonderful updates (including opengl 2.0 support). Well with Cat 5.6 that seems to have changed. Omega's version has support for MR9700 but I've encountered BSODs and just blank screens with almost every full-screen 3D application. Patje's mod doesn't work either on the 5.6's. Can't use ATI's mobility catalyst... no support for the 9700's yet (hopefully in the future?). So really we're left out in the cold.

My gripe: Acer doesn't care about updating drivers. OpenGL 2.0 is a big deal, big enough for an update.

My question: Anyone find any good 5.6s for the Ferrari 3200 that don't seem to have any issues? I'm currently trying DHzer0point and they're working better than Unian, Omega, DNA, and NGO. Or, did anyone find a way to modify the ATI official INF files?

Nuts.. all nuts... when Acer should be doing it for us. We buy their product and expect updated support!

Actually, Mobility Modder did work for me on Official Cat 5.6, you probably just need to get the latest version of modder. But the official drivers are a source of weird thing on my TM8104 - they sometimes prevent laptop from complete shutdown, i.e. everything stops but the LCD stays on and displays Acer wallpaper.

What's worse is that Zeropoint drivers cause a weird effect with Notebookforums.com - any page on this site is displayed with about 1-2 second delay when I switch between IE windows or tabs in Maxthon browser. It's just some redraw delay.

Two last versions of Omega do not support Mobility X700 at all.

Unian just refused to install.

So I added Mobility X700 to the latest Omega manually, and everything just works now.

These are the hardest times for all of us with mobile ATI chips in laptops.

You say they work on the Ferrari 3200? I know you can mod them to work on the X700, but not the 9700. I just tried, Patje's modder 2.2. Unless he has some new version...

I had to uninstall the zeropoints, my control panel got all corrupted and powerplay vanished.

So I'm pissed and fed up with this nonsense. I'm using the old default drivers from Acer until my copy of x64 comes. Heh, that'll be a whole new battle!

But yeah, I agree, hard times... let's just hope and pray to the almighty laptop god that there'll be Catalyst Mobility versions for everyone

Do you know where to download anything newer than the original driver on the ATI website so that I can reliably run newer games such as Battlefield 2?

Just installed the UniAN drivers while doing a clean install, seem to work a treat Not actually tested them out by gaming mind yet mind you, will report back soon! (Unlike the DVD thing... nope still haven't had anything to burn a DVD for, beginning to think I might as well have got a DVD/CD-RW instead!)
