Partition?

I would like to know how to partition a hard drive. I just received my Dell i8600 with a 60GB 7200 RPM hard drive and would likereformat my hard drive to install XP Pro and to make 2 partitions, a 40GB for the OS and other software and another 20GB partition for doc., music, movies, etc. When booting from the Windows XP Pro CD would i first delete the large partition....then what?TIA

I will post a review when I finish reformating and have spent some time with My M60. +I will take pic.s if anyone is intersted, but i have no webhosting abilities.

You are on the right track...

Once you boot the XP CD, delete the first partition (note: there may be a maintenance partition there, too... usually it's FAT or FAT32 and small - like 30MB or so - I would recommend leaving that alone, unless you are comfortable wiping it out if it exists).

Anyway, once the drive is "clean" with no partitions, you then type "C" at the windows install screen to "Create" a partition... the next screen allows you to type in the amount of space (i.e. "40000" - it's in KB, so that would be 40GB w/o the 1024 math-thing).

You can optionally highlight the remainder (unpartitioned) space and "C"reate another partition using what's left (default number windows puts in is the max availabe space).

There will be a 8MB "empty" space that you cannot delete / partition / use - this is a windows / NTFS thing, it's ok.

Then, highlighting the "C:" drive (first partition) hit [ENTER] to install XP on that partition.

Once windows is up and running, go into the management consol (right-click "My Computer" and select Manage, then go to the Disk section) and format the other partition (or create & format, if you didn't create it at the beginning).

Good luck,

It's all hit-or-miss, if someone's on who knows, usually they post.

Unfortunately, I cannot (and do not) read EVERY new post, but I try to hit most.

Is it really necessary to partition 60gigs? It's not that much space. I can see splitting up an 80/100/120/160 but I guess to be safe if anything goes screwy, huh? Personally, I think 40gigs for a C is too much, I'd go with 30.

My 8600's coming in this week!

It's not necessary to partition anything: it's a personal preference sort of thing.

I, personally, like to keep the OS and drivers on the C: (which only eats about 10GB at most) and then have other things parceled out.

There are pro's and con's for each method (partitioned or not), but I like the fact that I can have my "gaming" partition which gets lots of installs/deletes/etc. DEFRAGMENTED much quicker since it's only 20GB or so (versus 60GB, which would include the system, MFT/swap, etc if not partitioned).

Still, it's each person's own call.

Sorry, I know this is off topic, but when are the uxgas going to be available for the 8890?

I haven't heard if/when there will be more. Seeing what seems like a larger percentage of dead/stuck pixels from UXGA screens in the past (mine, for instance) I hope Sager/Clevo is a little more critical of the offerings available.

Thanks for the quick reply. My 5670 with uxga has 3 dead pixels but they're quite far from each other and barely noticeable. Only when I have a chat window at the spot of the pixel do I see it.

Okay, back to the topic at hand. Thanks myrkat.
