Cracks, stiff hinge on 5600D

Back in 2002 I purchased a fully decked out Prostar 5654/5600D unit which is the Clevo 5600D.

It has been okay for me, except for a few problems.

There have formed cracks on the display; but not because of any stress I put on it. When I move the LCD up (from closed position) I see that the hinges are EXTREMELY tight, and dont' move very easily. This has caused the back to almost totally crack all the way through. I have two problems here.

#1 I want to replace the top case. I have found only one place to do this: a guy on ebay selling the top case for $72 (which is extremely over priced). is there anywhere i can find this cheaper? The laptop is out of warranty, so Prostar won't do anything for me; especially not for cheap.

#2 I want to fix the hinge. I looked at the tech manual which I found on Clevo's page (same as the one on this forum) and it doesn't say how to get inside to look at the hinges. I'm sure it's beyond the scope of what a user SHOULD be doing. However, I'm afraid that even if I replace the plastic on the top, the new one will crack again due to the stiffness of the hinge. Does anyone know where I can get some instructions on how to get inside, or a cheap way to do it?

Thanks for any help.
