*Updated!!*New Official Sager NP9880 NP9860 Fan firmware & BIOS - Page 7

has any one who makes a clone made a bios yet that allows you to adjust voltages and FSB and other things? the bios is very stripped down.

Oops, I rescind what I said. I went ahead and assumed that the Continuous mode was the old always-on speed that all the non-noise-obsessed people liked. However, it is not. It is the same speed as the on/off firmware but with a lower fan-off temperature point, that's all.

Keep in mind that, unless I am misinformed, Hypersonic is not a reseller of Sager systems - rather a reseller of manufacturer systems like Clevo, ASUS, etc. That said, I would assume they have the same requirements as Sager (or any other company) in regards to providing troubleshooting for their equipment. And if a customer does something (either via painting or installing software) that may cause damage to the system, then they risk voiding their warranty.

Dennis covered this, but I thought I would add to it.

One note. I applied the update and it does seem to be doing much better. With fans on turbo, I have seen the idle temp drop to 35c. I haven't done any major gaming yet because of the work hours on this exercise deployment, but I will definitely put it to the test when I return.

The last time I sent my comp for repair (way back in January) they forward the machine straight to city of industry where Sager is. And when it was sent back to me, it came from the same address as Sager. So I would assume Sager does all if not most of the repairs. To be fair, when I had a dead pixel, they forward my machine to their facility in NY to be replaced with a perfect screen. So I think for spare part replacements etc, they do it on their own, but for repairs they send it back to Sager.

But no matter who does the repair, the main point is Hypersonic is a good company.

Ratmyr: without turbo-ing the fan, are you idling at higher temp than with the fan always on Bios? Please let me know, thanks.

Just installed new bios every lil bit helps

Fungo: It's about a 3-5C higher idle temp for me from the old always on to the new always on. (low 40s before, mid-high 40s now)

Thanks! I will, for now, stick w/ the always on bios. Especially in summer where it gets very hot here.

Yeah that's what I'm going to do, too. I don't see a reason to update again when I like how everything's running right now, but I've got the new stuff ready to install if I decide to update when the weather cools down in a few months.

I know APC gave you an answer, and I will follow up when I bring the system online later. I don't run it often because I work from 0445 to 1900 every day, so when I get back to the hotel, I eat and call it quits. But I should be able to give it a run.

Good info on the other comments on repair. Would be interested to find out the deal. Think I am going to ask. Pat@hypersonic-pc may also know. Will let everyone know what I find out.

Thanks.

Order of update doesn't matter

For those who are curious, the order in which you update the fan firmware and bios update doesn't matter. Me being a dumb ass updated my bios w/o reading Luke's full message, but fortunately nothing happened. It showed my the automatic/continuous option in the bios, but it didn't work. So, I then updated the fan firmware to the one that Luke provided after which the Fn+F2 works and fans are going nonstop at high speed. I wish there was a middle option instead of being just high or low, but it works and am happy.

I've noticed that when bios is on continuous and you hit fn+f2 and goto to 100%, the next time you hit fn+f2 to go back to normal it shuts the fans off completely until the cpu gets back to 60°. gpu goes back to normal though. once the cpu hits 60 they jump to 100 for the 1-2 seconds and then start running normal again. so there is an on/off when you cycle through the function key, even in continuous mode.

Hmmmm...just got my brand new 9880 this past Friday (15th), and I seem to already have this installed.

If I hit fn+f2, it does exactly what you guys are talking about. I also noticed that when my fans first come on, it's the full blast deal for 1 sec, then throttles back to a quieter mode.

So...I'm guessing that this is already on my lappy. Would seem kind of silly for Sager to update their fan firmware for internet download but not put it on their brand new systems coming out after the firmware was released. Although, I don't have the new bios installed.

Just checked it. It's from 3/3/05 and, there is no fan control. Do I really need the new bios? Even my gpu fan is throttling up and down, just like you guys mentioned.

Oh yeah, where are you guys getting the temps from? Where is this program at? I used to have one on my old Dell Insipron 8200 but, I can't find anything for this Sager.

The bios is for if you would like to choose between always on or on/off fan mode during general use (Fn+F2 for full mode available for both). Cpu temps are read with MobileMeter and GPU temps with GetThermal (note warranty disclaimers with use of GetThermal though)

Thanx for the info, APC.

This update is better than sliced bread but not better than canned beer.
I notice a difference in fan control and i have the extra menus in the advance tab of the bios on my 9880, only the fn-f2 key combination appears to do nothing. No change of fan speed or behavior. Only changes in the bios change the temperature of the CPU and fan behavior

Any suggestions, thanks.

you did not instal the correct fan firmware.
I only installed the BIOS firmware from WinPlash, i did not know it was a 2 step process. I will look for the fan firmware.

Thanks

go to the very first page of this thread for the info you need.

I think I've totally lost my USB floppy drive, uhh, any ideas as to what I could do if I want to use that fan firmware still?
