OK, I think my problem is solved then, my card was installed upside down and backwards, that explains my high temps.

Cool, if that's the case then I will flash it and use it instead. Beats letting Gethermal use 27 mb's of my 2gb ram.

you are right, luke. it does control the gpu, even better! i can hear the gpu fans throttle up, even shut down with the rest of the fans when i turn of always on mode.
so a stupid question. We always hear that temperature fluctuations are bad for electronic components. The fact that the temperature varies between 45 and 60 C every 5 minutes won't cause problems?

If you run Gethermal and then hit fn-f2 you can see all the fan speeds go from default to 100%, all of them.

Temperature stability + medium but reasonable noise.

I'm also very curious about the GPU temps, as the left palm rest feels much warmer. I don't know that I like the idea of the gpu having the fan off ever, it only has a small heatpipe, not 2 huge ones like the CPU. I think I'm going to take the plunge and use GetThermal, so I can read GPU temps. It'd be sweet if Sager released a crippled GetThermal that only reads the gpu temp, something like MobileMeter even, for people that are curious about the gpu temps but don't want to mess with the fans.

Fan noise on high = DAMN ITS LOUD. But runs cool.
Fan noise on low / throttle = a bit less loud (or the same) than what shipped with my 9880.

****A middle option would be nice to have fans on medium speed (like the 9860 when it had no throttling).****

FN + F2 = Low / Throttleing
FN + F2 = Medium fan speed & high throttle. **PLEASE ADD THIS OPTION**
FN + F2 = HIGH TURBO COOLING MODE.

Don't get me wrong I am happy for the added feature. When gaming I feel better having a cooler Notebook instead of temps jumping all over the place.

I agree the left palm is way hotter and the temperature of my CPU never goes below 45C while I was idling at 35C before. Temperature fluctuates way more now between 45 and 60C.
I think that I am going to go back to the old fan firmware.

Well I'm impressed; it's a marked improvement from having no [warranty-safe] control over my 9880's fans. Thank you PCT/Sager/Clevo.

Of course it can be improved, but it's a step in right direction...Think of how many other manufacturers out there would have done nothing.

One of the most important features of this that nobody's mentioned is that you can now cool down the device with a 10-15 second blast of air just before shutting down. As like auto-engines, it gets warmer before it gets cooler once shut down.

Thanks!

I was thinking the same b/c it's easier than dragging the floppy drive out of storage...Let us know your results!

I haven't looked in BIOS to see if there's a selection for external USB stick to boot from.

you can, just open it and don't change anything, just read the temp displays.

I definitely have gone back to the old always-on firmware. I did some quick but highly unscientific tests (hard to alt-tab out of a game to check GetThermal while still getting a peak temp, a mobmeter graph would be much easier) on the GPU temp (I have the original 6800) (and I also updated CPU temps on page 3 but those are pretty simple)

New firmware temps:

Low mode, idle: R 59 L 53
load: R 75 L 69

High mode, idle: R 51 L 45
load: R 64 L 61

Old firmware, idle: R 55 L 49
load: R 66 L 62

There probably should be more disparity between the high mode and then old firmware (hence my warning of unscientific) but in general it seems like there isn't a huge difference. Also, I'm personally more interested in the general use idle temps as well as the consistency of the CPU fans, which for me means I'm all over the old firmware.

Edit:

Another thing I've noticed: The VGA fan noise is negligible. It could (should?) be at max speed all the time, or at least higher than the 30% it normally is at. The DDR fan, too.

Ummm, when will there be an update like this for 3880? At the moment i can't find a fan controller for my 3880.
Wow it sounds like this update is doing different things for different people (unless some of you are using GetThermal with this). My temperature stays stable somewhere between 47 and 50 in normal use, and the fans always stay very quiet. With the TV on I can barely hear them, and can definitely notice a difference from the old way in a quiet room.

I think I will stick with the fan always on firmware. It has served me well for the past 6 months. I wasn't used to it at the beginning, but now it doesnt bother me at all. I am idling at 42-43, and it seems like the new firmware will result in higher idling temp. Also I read somewhere that the roller-coaster temperature (w/ the new firmware) is bad for the CPU. Maybe I am wrong.

But if it doesnt break, don't fix it.

Man... something like this comes out while I am in the field. I left the USB drive at home as I didn't expect that I would need it. I too would love a way to boot from a USB stick to do this. Someone should come up with a way to do that.

I am glad to see this as I was a big fan of this option when it was released for the GX7/8790 systems. It was good for my gaming.
Is there a way I can do it without the floppy drive? I didn't get one with my 9860 :O
post #57 of 207
Couldn't you use a CD-R/-RW instead of a floppy for this function and then just boot form the CD? I believe that is what I did on my 8790.

Yeah, you can. That is what I am considering on doing. Bart's boot CD tutorials and other users here have posted some good hints on doing this. I have my files at home, so will have to redownload. But that is no big deal. More than likely, I am just going to stop by the local IT store and pick up a CD-RW... I hate wasting a CD-R. CD-RW can be just as bad, as I don't use them much any more, but then again, my wife does.

I found a utility on HP's site that allows you to format a USB drive as a boot disk (as long as you have the MSDOS files required), however, I haven't been able to see if the EX7/9860/9880 recognizes a USB drive as a bootable device. My system at work does though.
