9860 check-in...

Thread Starter
I've had my 9860 since this past December, and I thought it might be a good time to see how all of the other 9860s are holding up.

Luckily, thus far, I've had virtually no problems. The machine runs like a dream and sees plenty of heavy usage. I've also been using the 6800go at higher clock speeds since its second day with no problems. Runs cool, runs fast. Of course, I thought the wireless was shot for a while...but it turns out that Fn-F11 was actually a shortcut for disabling it (oops).

The build quality is really tops as it remains in flawless condition (outside of fingerprints on the outer cover).

I also use a small Acer TM3000 (very small, actually) for work. They make a good team, with the 9860 staying home ready for entertainment while the 3000 tags along for actual work.

I guess my only complaint revolves around the soundcard and its inability to produce quality sound from the headphone output (it sounds very tinny and bass-less). I simply ended up using an external soundcard instead, which fixed the problem...

Anyone else still having good fortune with their 9860s?

I am still very happy with performance, quality, etc... I have had mine since November. The screen is beautiful. Just found out about the fan speed bios, will upgrade that, and saving up my pennys for when the ATI 800XL comes out. Then I may upgrade video, but am very happy with 1st generation 6800go.

Bought a 9860 direct from Sager back in February. It worked for 20 minutes then the CPU fan failed/stopped and the CPU fried. It might have fallen victim to the sticky fan bios bug. I'm not sure. Regardless, it was dead and I returned it the next day, not pleased with a $4500 paperweight.

I convinced myself that I was just unlucky with that 9860 and decided to buy another, this one from PCT in March. It worked for 3 weeks then video card failed due to no thermal paste between center of GPU and heat sink (thermal paste was only on edges of GPU to heat sink contact) and two missing heat sink pads.

Sager cross shipped new card but it was flashed with the wrong bios. Spent a week trying to get it to work without success. Sager said they'd ship me another. I returned first card. More than two weeks later I found out they haven't even sent it yet.

Also had to reload the OS twice because of corrupt audio driver problems that were unrecoverable any other way.

Since everyone else's 9860 is working perfectly I suppose my experience is... unique.

I have had mine going strong now without ANY issues so far.

I do have one complaint though. ( Just a little bad luck is all ) I bought mine 3 days before they had the cut off for the $100 off trade up on the Ultra. Not sure if I really need the Ultra but you all know how hard it is not to have the top of the line I feel like that kid from the Bloom County comic strip. As he is opening up his brand new Bannana Jr. 2000 he sees a comercial for the Bannana Jr. 2000 "NOW with TINT control" Next thing you see is him takeing his comp out to the trash

Got mine in Feb. I have the same sweatie palm sindrone. Im here in the desert of Kuwait. Only problem I have is trying to keepup with the screw, last month I notice that I lose some screws from under the bottom, so know every once and awhile I check to make sure they are tight.( still have to see about getting replacement ones). But I can deal with it, I love my babe

Outside of this odd little issue in which the machine constantly displays as if it's plugged in, I've had no issues at all.

I simply _adore_ this machine.

mine's been purring (silently, surprise surprise) since the relase of the 9860's last year... (i had stumbled in to sagers offices to change a 48xx and the mentioned they had the 9860's in that week... i couldn't resist)

the beast even withstood a nasty knock -- dropped out of my friends car while travelling through cali, was in the delightful Targus backpack, alas its padded everywhere except the TOP... which is where it cracked into the bare pavement. Nearly crapped myself to find only a scratch on its corner... been working fine since (this was 8 mo. ago)

anyways - brilliant product for me!
