After a long and painful wait, I finally received my new toy with follwoing spec....boy did I wanna get this beauty soon Smile

T43 2687-DRU
1.86GHz Sonoma, 512 DDR2 RAM, 60G 5400 RPM HD, Intell wireless a/b/g, CD-RW/DVD, 14.1 inch SXGA+....for $1350 + tax through EPP.

problems:

1) keyboard-feel dissapointment:

Its keyboard wasn't exactly what I expected..doesn't feel much different from keyboard on cheap Dells. What's going on? ah...I have the Chicony keyboard...sucks..so I first called tech support who told me right off the bat that I need to talk to my sale rep since it's been less than a week from receipt of the laptop. The sale rep told me that nothing he can do and told me to call a tech support. called the tech support again and was greeted by a rather rude and obtuse rep and was told nothing he can do...after long argument he agreed to send a NMB keyboard but said I may be billed after sending my original keyboard back....???? complete non-sense...why would I send my original keyboard back and pay for the new one?? but he said I may not have to pay for it if they don't catch the difference between my original keyboard (chicony) and the new one(nmb)..so just waiting to see what happened.

2) fan on all the time:

This is really annoying....I understand this was discussed many times before..but never really read about a solution...is there one?

3) support:
Being a first IBM buyer, I heard many good things about IBM's support..but from what I've experienced so far..they are no different than other ones from other company...just shifting the tickets around saying "nothing I can do"

I am just waiting for the new keyboard to arrive and hopefully find a solution to the fan problem... Sad
Feel free to comment on your experience with ibm's support and problems listed above.
thanks

There is a noticeable difference between the two keyboards. The chicony feels softer and quieter while the NMB feels more solid and thorough with more noise.

you mean the other way around...nmb feels softer and quieter while chicony feels lighter with more noise..

Yes, you're correct - Im still confused over the parts because on the parts lookup page for IBM, it says 'no parts listed'.

Since I was originally set to order a T42p, I can tell you right now: their web site is complete and utter crap. Just because it says something doesn't mean a THING.

Also, I don't think IBM is really "up there" in terms of customer service anymore. After spending a week waiting for them to actually place my order, I had to cancel it since I needed the laptop by a deadline. They just seem to work slowly...

How were you going to acquire the thinkpad ? - through work or ?

If it's only you and it's a personal machine - they may move slower due to their primarily business clientele.

I haven't had any problem with customer service, whatsoever. Very friendly, curteous and respectful - what matters a lot to me too is their mostly english speaking staff - native tongue and not some outsourced customer service personel trying to speak english as best they can.

Call call call! Their online service leaves much to be desired. The special educational discount page had this sort of "shopping list" of items. How many laptops, ram sticks, industrial strength pony analyzing accessories would just be filled in with a quantity on the right. It doesn't tell you if they're compatible, if it doesn't already have one or whatever. I called and had it ordered in like 10 minutes. Of course, it could just be because I'm (my school) a big educational account that they want to keep happy.

Just received the new NMB keyboard....boy does this feel different....I am loving it.
Now...the tech support rep told me that I had to send my original keyboard back since this was a replacement....BUT he mentioned that although it is unlikely, I may be billed since a Chicony keyboard only subs for another Chicony keyboard and not a NMB keyboard...so if they catch the different brand on the keyboard I send back, then I will be charged...
Does this make sense? Why should I pay for a new keyboard and give up my old one?
I am thinking about not sending in the original keyboard...
What do you guys think?
thanks

when you order the laptop, can you specify the type of keyboard?
I was actually ordering it as a student... They took a week to try and verify the credit card, and to no avail. The guy who was orchestrating the order was very nice, but the credit people... 7 days and no update? That was the ridiculous part. The credit people were probably in China, so its not surprising. Plus, most of the tech support people I got could barely speak English and seemed, well, frustrated. :x

And no, you can't specify the type of keyboard.

You'll need the serial number which you may not have yet, you usually get it at shiptime. Here's the page though:
Parts Lookup
