PC World top 15 notbooks

Thread Starter
PC World, whose slogan is "TECHNOLOGY ADVICE YOU CAN TRUST"" has their top 15 notebooks in 3 categories list I thought I'd point out:

http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/artic...,121206,00.asp

Here's their top 5 in the desktop replacement category:
  • 1) Acer TravelMate 8100
  • 2) IBM ThinkPad T43
  • 3) Dell Inspiron 6000
  • 4) HP Pavilion Dv4000
  • 5) Alienware Area-51m 7700

The ThinkPad T43 with the 14.1" LCD made #2 DESKTOP REPLACEMENT and the Dell XPS2 is not even listed.

I found this and a few other rankings a bit surprising. What does everyone think?

I think that if you look around now, you won't really find news of the XPS 2 as the best desktop replacement around. CNET rated it really highly, but then when you browse through their website, you can't really find XPS 2 in any of their top category listing. XPS 2 only appears through search. I think maybe this is due to lack of advertisement fees from Dell? I mean the fact that not very many people own XPS 2 makes it a kind of a luxury good. Many that's the reason why Dell didn't really push to advertise their product? I don't know but these are just some of my views.

It's probably another poorly-researched article slapped together to meet a deadline. Hell, they don't even list the Alienware Area-51m as the Clevo D900T, which is kind of misleading.

Wow, when they are talking about desktop replacements are they saying "laptops that are unnessecarily heavy which have no power like a desktop, so they don't need to be heavy?" The only computer their that is a DTR is the Alienware. Desktop replacements are considered as heavy notebooks with the power resembling a desktops. What should be on there is the Dell Xps Gen 2, the Dell Inspiron 9300 (can't believe the 6000 was put on their than these two laptops.) Asus z71v, Acer Ferrari 4000 series, Sager 9880, and the Alienware 7700 (not in that order.)

WHAT A BUNCHA HORSE SHIT. How in the hell are you gonna put a Alienware 7700 weighing at 14.8lbs on there and then a Dell 6000 which is FAR from a DTR and not a GEN2..

Screw PCWORLD last time I listen to their advice.

So I'm guessing the travelmate is a good computer? Or does everyone disagree?

about as good as the Dell 6000 being a desktop replacement.

I agree totally. The whole idea behind a "DTR" is that it sacrifices some of it's portability for power and higher-end specs. The 6000 being listed above the 9300 AND the XPS2 is a dead giveaway that this list isn't very accurate.

I think the notebooks which are listed on PCWORLD are mainly big companies that produce the laptops. First on the list is Acer 8100, has major bugs and problems with sound. Then comes dell which is also a big company. I don't see them posting SAGER or other companies that produce laptops.
OK, now these notebooks in the list are great notebooks, in my opinion. But you guys are right that most of them don't fit the label "desktop replacement". For example, I would consider my ThinkPad T42 (predecessor of the T43) a thin and light notebook.

I don't think when PC World says Desk Top Replacement they mean Gaming Rig/enthusiest desktop Replacement. A Inspiron 6000 or a T43 is a fine replacement for most desktops sold by Dell or Gateway or off a shelf at Best Buy. Neither of those, or most other laptops for that matter, are going to come anywhere close to replacing a Falcon Mark V or similar box from the companies that focus on the enthusiest crowd.

I think one of the significant problems reviews like this have is a hidden emphasis on price. CNET, in my opinion, is notorious for reviewing something (be it a TV, laptop, camera, whatever) in an "ultra high-end" category and then slamming it for being expensive. There's no way the 7700 should make that list and the Sager and XPS2 get cut. I'm not saying any one of those is superior to another, but they are all in the same price/performance range. Just my opinion.

THIS IS EXACTLY MY POINT! You can't put a Alienware 7700 on there and not include the 9300, Sager 9880 and the XPS GEN2.

If they are going for just regular lightweight replacements for non enthuesists then they should have the Asuz z71v and the Acer Ferrari 4005...And even then a step below that sure, then you can include the Acer and the Dell 6000 and So on.

What A joke... winbook @ 5.5Lb is not ultraportible! and the hp NC8230 1st allaround... more like 1st half assed @ $2100. The only one i agree qith is the dell 700m with is price perfomance and potablility at 4.5lb

WHERES THE DELL 9300! Thats one of the best laptops/desktops I've had the chance to use the longest you dont have to lug it around

Hi

Are there any online reviews that people think are more accurate?

Thanks

I'm flattered to say that the 8100 is there as a desktop replacement. While I agree that it can "Replace a desktop" it's nowhere near the top of being an ACTUAL desktop replacement. As people have actually already said - the xps2 and others clearly are the best DTR's. The 8100 is a performance thin notebook - not really a DTR.

The Sager 9880, to put it simply, is the Alienware 7700.

i think PC World is crap. i got it for a while but they always just seemed kindof stupid.

after all they rate Norton Antivirus as #1.... isnt that enough?

i heard they get big payoffs from companies... and like they dont review tons of great Antivirus software packages cause they would kick Norton's ass and they cant have that happening...
