errr... I think my battery is defective...

See my sig for my laptop config. NOTE: I have not undervolted anything

This is whats happening...
I was playing Hoyle Board Games 2005 on batteries... and damn does it eat up the battery at 800Mhz (50% CPU Power). I am pretty sure I was playing for less than an hour. So... my laptop unexceptedly went into standby and I was like WTF happened. So, I ran it to the AC adapter and plugged it in quick and turned it back on, to find it was at 5% charge!!! So I shutdown my laptop figuring it would recharge faster without having negative affects on my battery's charge hold. I went to sleep, woke up in the morning to find that the battery charge light was still on. I have MoblieMeter so i took a look at my battery status/info. My Designed Cap=64500mWh, Fully Charged Cap=59475mWh, and Remaining Wattage=43770mWh. So it still has space to charge!!! (NOTE: before this the Fully Charged Cap=63500 I think) I look at my charge rate and its not charging!!!!! its at 0.00w !!! I take out my AC plug and stick it back in... the charge rate jumps to 29ish watts. Whew i thought.. but after coming back from work (10 hours later) I return to the exact same senario!!! Damn ornage light is still on!!! I have nothing in the USB ports.

Any idea whats wrong? any questions? and suggestions... right now I'm just continueally taking out the AC plug and sticking it back in until I get full charge. I've had my Z71V since the end of April.

I'm having a similar issue, although not quite so bad, and will be talking to Rick from istnc tonight about it. His initial advice for me was to let the battery drain completely (until notebook shuts off), than plug it in and let it charge up overnight. You might want to try that for starters.

Hmm I haven't had battery power yet...

Go into the BIOS and re-calibrate the battery. That will drain up the battery and recharge it...

DO NOT RUN IT DOWN.

I have the exact same issue. Discharging the battery will make the problem WORSE.

Give it partial discharges and prepare to take it in for servicing. Trust me, I was losing 5% max charge with each complete discharge cycle. Anything past 50% discharge is certain to drop it.

Okay, I'm not positive that it's the same issue, but I have three questions.

1)Is it stopping at a % below 100%? As in "Does Windows say that your battery is 80-90% charged and is the charge light on, even though the actual charge is <1W?"
2)Did your battery light stay on even though it was at 100% charge before the problem?
3)What does Centrino Hardware Control say your battery wear level is?

If you answered yes to #1, fully discharging your battery will quite likely only make it worse.

I'm at 7% Loss of max charge

1) Yes its stopping at a % below 100%... In the morning it stopped at 65%... after work... 71%... plug out/in.... 75% now

2) No

3) Im getting my stats for MobileMeter

Yeah. Mine's similar, although it didn't have a super-fast rundown and it initially said it was charging at 100%. You may want to try a full discharge, because these are somewhat different cases, but there are a lot of similar symptoms. 7% loss=7% wear, I think.

This is an issue that we are currently addressing to see where the problem lies. So far we have received 14 main batteries that were thought to be bad or weak, of the 14, so far all have charged to 100%. There is obviously a problem, its either software or hardware related, we are attempting to find which it may be so it can be addressed. Once we find a fix we'll make sure to post it.

Rick

Thanks, Rick. I'm hoping that you'll find something, because this is really worrisome.

Hmmm are you guys using BIOS 0208? That is the latest BIOS...

I don't see the battery problem you guys are talking about
post #10 of 896
actually, I saw BIOS 0209 on Asus' support site...

but yes, I'm using the 0208 BIOS, and I'm glad you're not having the problem. I'd assume this, like most issues, doesn't affect everyone, but only some folks.

The BIOS update did nothing for me. Well, technically, not nothing. My computer is running slower right now, although I suspect that it's just because I rebooted for the first time after a flash.

I to am having the same problme. Just It just started last week. I hope this can be fixed as I dont want a dead batter in a 2 month old notebook. I am on the 0208 bios. I will update to the new one to see if it helps.
That 2.09 is for the Update utility... I thought it was 0209 too, but alas, it was not so...

I second that!

For a minute there i thought you said there were 0209..hehe i was just on there earlier and didn't see it hehehe

The cause could be storing the battery IN the pc while on ac power. Rick explicitly told me not to do that when I ordered my notebook, and so far I'm not having any troubles.

so you mean every time you plug in you take out your battery?
but why would you not do this on this notebook when everyone other notebook dose that?. If should stop charger untill you unplug the ac like every other notebook dose. That is what is used to do but now I just stay at 87%
