The charge light occasionally coming on for a minute isn't a sign of the problem. That's just the computer "topping off" or "double checking" the battery charge, and it's normal.

So far, replacing the batteries seems to work for ending the problem for a majority of users.

Well, that's why we're guessing it's the battery's problem right? At least for now, it's solved my problems. It's charged up from one really deep discharge and two medium ones so far perfectly.

That's what I thought, but I imagined that it was best to be sure.

i'm not so sure about that... one of my batteries (i have had 3 die on me) developed the problem after sitting in my notebook case for a couple of weeks... it was at 100% when i disconnected it, then after a couple of weeks put it back in my computer and won't stop charging

+1 on this... I rarely had my battery connected to my laptop since I didn't move it. Of the nearly 3 months that I own it, the battery was on the computer only about 1/3 of the time... Just every two weeks I discharged it and recharged it to keep it in shape. Or so I thought.

does any one who DOESNT have the problem leave the the power plugged-in when u shut down?

I think my battery is definitely starting to exhibit this problem. CHC is showing 17% wear and my battery does not charge past 87%. It's manageable for now, but I'll email Rick @ ISTNC about it and see about getting it fixed/replaced or whatever.

I got my laptop in June if that is important at all. This is kind of frustrating as I do use my laptop a lot for class notes.

UPDATE: I called Asus and talked to some guy that barely spoke english. All I said is that I had a battery problem with my Z71V and they got my information and are sending a new battery. They must be running into this problem a lot. Hopefully the new battery fixes it.

Replacement Battery Installed

After a 5 day turnaround including the weekend, the replacement for my "bad" battery is installed. It arrived with a 45% charge, but was soon charged to 100%. The James Lin - Mila Chao team at Asus did good. As I have said before, it's best to deal direct with Asus on this problem. BTW, one of my customers had the LCD die on his M6BNe about 7 days before the warranty was to expire. We called Asus, described the symptom and got the RMA in about 2 hours. The notebook was shipped out Fedex overnight. My customer was traveling two days later so he asked that the notebook be shipped to his destination. The following day I got an email saying that the notebook was shipped. It got to the destination even before my customer arrived there, exactly 48 hours after the problem was reported. Now where are you gonna get service like that?

Well, I'm shipping my bad battery to Asus for replacement. Hopefully the new one doesn't shit out like my first one.

I know it must be a bit early, but has anyone had ANY kind of problem with the new batteries as well? As far as I understand the batteries are not the problem otherwise ASUS would just make an announcement for replacement for specific serial numbers right?

Perhaps as had been stated many times that they don't know what the problem is yet and thus can't put a range of serial numbers out there.

It's been almost a week now and it's still working great.

I've had to replace a replacement, as has one other forum member, but for the most part, the replacement batteries seem to be doing the trick. And from what I heard last, Asus is trying to compile a range of battery serial numbers affected.

When are they going to formally address the problem?

As a potential buyer, it concerns me that I haven't heard about any recalls or anything. I'm a bit of a media junkie (I'm a reporter at a paper)...so it's bugging me that I can't seem to find anything on the Asus web site. Even the support forum has a few people on there who have the problem, but no one's posted in weeks. When is the company going to issue a statement about this?

E.g. - Microsoft had a problem with faulty cords for their Xboxes, and the news was everywhere - gaming web sites, my newspaper even had a brief recall story about it.

Well, I'd assume that the Z71V isn't exactly a big volume product for ASUS. In fact, I doubt any of their name brand notebooks are high volume, by most standards. (I'm talking millions of units here) They're still mainly an ODM manufacturer of notebooks and their actual retail models probably don't generate too much of their revenue. I mean xbox is a relatively high volume and high-image product, meaning xbox is a big part of the MS image, whereas these notebooks probably aren't for ASUS.

That's not fair to these guys on here who have already bought the product. In any business you should own up to mistakes.

And it's costing them future buyers like me, because I'm not going to purchase this product until I know the problem has been resolved.

Definitely true, they should at least acknowledge the problem. However be assured that they're doing a very good job replacing them at least.

I think this is just a sign that I'm not ready for a lappy. I suppose I'll wait until Christmas and hope the new batches they put out don't have this problem. I feel for you guys though. It sucks when something like this happens.
